Just idly looking through the classifieds and saw a 968 tiptronic. What are they like to drive?

Possibly OK in the Cabrio bodystyle if you are aiming at fairly relaxed cruising with the top down. For serious driving, the Tip saps a lot of the performance and can't seriously be recommended.

Ah, wondered why they came in cheaper than the manuals - now I know!

really depends what youre after. the 968 cabrio is a truly beautiful car, but then I would say that. the manual is a brilliant rewarding drive, provided you are prepared to keep the revs up above 3-3.5k. the tip is pedestrian by comparison, and the performance figures speak volumes with the tip fully 1-1.5secs slower to 60 depending on where you source your figures.
If you live in the city, or do lots of high speed motorway cruising then the tip is ideal. If you love fiddly corners, blasts in the country and wiggly roads then avoid.
as an addendum, more than twice as many tip cabs as manual cabs were imported to the UK during the 968's brief reign so if youre after a manual cab you have much more limited choice

I've driven a couple of tip cabs and they are fabulous around town in heavy traffic but just don't do it for me on the open road. 0-60 drops from 6 to 7.5 seconds-ish. In town, the manual is a pretty heavy drive and the 12 mile home through central london does give your clutch foot a good workout but as soon as you hit the open road, it's a different world.

I'll keep my 968 Sport thanks.

I think the 968 Sport would be the one I went for if I had the cash. ClubSport is a bit too focused for me, the standard model a bit soft (IMHO).

Prices don't seem to be coming down below 10k (except for Tips) so I may be looking at 944 S2 / Turbo territory.
