997 Boxster creaking in steering wheel even when stationary
Discussion
[yes its a 987 not 997]
I have been reading through the many many squeaky threads on here but most related to external/suspension type noises.
My issues is a creaking from just inside the steering wheel (or top of the column) and happening even if the car is not moving.
eg; turning the wheel when stationary generates a creaking
My first instinct is to take the wheel off and squirt WD40 everywhere but:
1) That might not be a easy as it sounds and the airbag frightens me a lot
2) Might not solve the issue
Anyone recognise the creak, and or comment on taking the wheel off to have a look?
Thanks

Wd40 - definitely don’t use this. It’s basically not a lube.
Had a squeak on my Audi A6 and involved a whole new steering column. It fixed it but cost thousands. Fortunately under warranty but squeak was all the time - like a mouse was inside.
I now hear occasional limited squeaks from my Macan. I think it’s heat and cold related.

It may still be the drivers side top mount, the sound seems like it comes from the steering column but it's deceiving. Take off the plastic cover, the rubber cover over the outside of the suspension area and spray something like liquid lithium grease in there. If the noise goes, then you have your culprit (he says from experience).
