I'm looking to get a long zoom lens for my D70 (currently just got the 18-70 DX kit lens), has anyone got any experience of using the Nikon 75-300 F4.5-5.6 lens?

there's one on ebay right now, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3343&item=7525068093&rd=1
which looks good, and at a good price.

Looking at the lens, it seems to have the cpu mounts, but would it be fully compatible with My D70? Info is a bit scarce on these, and apparently they stopped making them in 1999.

Cheers
TP

Looks to be a good lens if rather heavy. As it's not 'D' I'd check that it's D70 compatible first - maybe ask the seller or join Nikonians and ask on the Nikkor forum.

Mmm - quite a good bargain, possibly.

As it's an AF lens, produced relatively recently, and it has CPU contacts, you will, I believe, have compatability with a D70.

(I use an AI-P lens for example, it's manual focus but meters and communicates aperture correctly.)

There are a few lenses (and always listed in Nikon manuals et cetera) which have limited compatability with the latest cameras. These tend to be some specialist autofocus lenses for some bodies(F3HP) and specialist converters (like the TC16a) as well as lenses which protrude back into the body and would foul a mirror (certain fisheyes). As far as I know all CPU capable lenses apart from the specialists ones will:

a) fit
b) meter
c) stop down correctly

What it won't do is:

d) convey distance info to the body
e) allow the ultra-super-duper iTTL flash metering system to take all the decisions for you if you're going to use it with flash

Also, this lens should autofocus using the old steam-driven-water-wheel-powered-ancient-screw-turn method. So it won't be ultra fast, but it'll work!

It has, I believe, got a "focus limit" switch, which will be useful to restrict the autofocus range when/if it's hunting for focus. It might be a bit "fussy" too, because F5.6 and low light won't always mix well with your D70's autofocus unit. May need a patient and tolerant user!!!!

Optically, I don't think you'll find that it's more than a small step behind the quality of the latest 70-300. The design appears to be similar, although the better, latest has an improvement with ED glass. May be a case of watching for flare and glare when in use.

It will definitely be heavier than the latest offering (although that might NOT be a bad thing for steady handholding) and on the (relatively) light D70 your balance point will be further forward.

It has a tripod collar, I think, from the pictures. But several of these were fairly "flimsy" on certain telephotos. You might consider investing in another after-market collar to provide a rock solid base when on a tripod (which itself will need to be a fair quality !)

It may be an obvious comment, but it'll benefit from a lens hood if you want half-decent results.

It's the sort of lens I would consider, but you'd have to know and be understanding of its limitations!

Good luck....

Not entirely, but for 95% of cases I think you'd be fine. And there's always the monitor to check

Well, it went for nearly as much as at a secondhand dealer! £109, not bad, but not a real bargain after all!

Yep, i've been watching it 'til the end, i didn't bid, as one from the dealer was only 10 quid more!
