Does anyone have any info as to the fine , you could expect for driving with a radar detector in France ?

After reading about the instant ban for exceeding 50kph on motorways and 750 euro fine ....surely its safer to have a radar detector fitted and plead....ignorant if pulled ?

assuming you bought and concealed the detector how detectable are radar detectors can they be picked up while in use ?
if not which is the easist to hide

or is a case that if say installed on the dash board and are noticed by French police.

In Brittany I know of only 2 static cameras , the likely hood of getting caught would be a mobile speed trap ?

a heavy fine is one thing , being pulled over , handing over your license and getting the car trailered home is far worse

In brittany no toll rds , roads / dual carriageways almost empty , in 1 year have seen very few French traf pole.

advice on detecters apreciated.

The Froggy cops have a habit of targeting the foreign cars and turning them over in an effort to find contraband such as detectors - the advice is LEAVE IT AT HOME!

Pre the Euro - I was pulled over (not speeding at that moment)

Froggy cop - points to the radar - "zis is not allowed"

"Terribly sorry about that - I didn't know it was illegal"

Then he taps his revolver and says "guns are legal in france but not in England"

Fair point i think !

The emptied my wallet of money (4000 francs) took the radar detector as well.

French police target foreign cars and that's an official statement that they make in the French press

So now i have a Bel955 hidden behind the bumper (totally undetectable)

good point if it can be concealed completly , seems to be the way .

theres no way Im risking getting pulled at 180 kph on a deserted french carriage way and giving up license and having the car towed back to blighty..

cheers

You know that one of the detector manufacturers makes a device for detecting detectors? Some of the Frog coppers carry them in their cars. Even if your Bel is not visible, it could be discovered.

Presumably these devices can only be detected when switched on. The answer then is a handy little switch that the driver can get to easily, so he can cut power to his detector and garage door opener while being pulled over.

For several years Bel detectors have had something called 'Stealth' technology that's supposed to make them undetectable.

I remember reading a US test of various detectors (in R&T or C&D?) and they confirmed that this does actually work. The Bels were completely undetectable even when switched on and right next to the detector-detector. They tested some of the other top makes with similar anti-detection systems and those could be detected - some only up close though.

By the way, I looked into remote detectors a few months ago. As far as I know the best one (possibly the only one) suitable for use in UK/Europe is the Bel 966R. There are actually two versions available. The newer one is called the Target EVO 966R and seems to be produced/modified by a Dutch company. The older one is the Vector Europa 966R and that's quite a lot cheaper. They look the same but the Target one is more sensitive. By the way, if the antenna is behind a metallic painted bumper, the metal particles are supposed to reduce sensitivity.

Do the French Police actually go over cars looking for remote-mounted detectors? They'd have to spend ages doing that and virtually nobody has one anyway.
