Anyone know if I can get a set of NGK B7ECS spark plugs and a new set of plug leads for a 400SE from Halfrauds or the like ? - I need to get a set today if possible in order to eliminate these from my low speed rough running.
Car is fine at anything above 2,600 rpm but a bag of nails below this & keeps trying to stall, and is popping and banging away - have cleaned stepper motor to no avail.

I have bought leads in the past from Halfords, take the old ones down and size up with the generic ones. I have bought the plugs as well. All off the shelf.

For a more permanent solution and better leads, complete with nice holder/spacers, DJE in Nuneaton.

Doh, should get this all in one post.

I had a problem a bit similar solved by sealing the stepper and sorting the loose connections on the airflow meter. The big one similar to a D plug. Several of the plugs connectors were loose so very carefully (as they seemed like they might snap) tightened them up. Problem is I did both at the same time so assume it was the loose connectors.

Halfords will order plugs for you but they are not cheapest. I found my local motorfactors could get them a lot cheaper.

Doesn't particularly sound like an HT type problem tbh. I would be more inclined to suspect an air leak, or air metering problem. These tend to be more obvious at low speed/low throttle.

When I heard it in Le Mans with my head under the bonnett I did mention a possible air leak noise, but could not find one which may heave been the heat or the beer from it eluding me.

When you put the stepper motor back did you seal ? For instance wrap some plumbers tape round the thread before putting back in. Could still be a faulty stepper but you will unfourtunately never know unless you have a known working spare

I don't think it would be plugs or leads ,as they normally (in my experience) brake down under load and should not be much load at idle.

Yep sounds like air leak, spray some engine or switch cleaner around the manifold/ plenum and see if the engine note changes.
The other posibility is broken or disconnected fuel pressure regulator vacuum pipe (to the stepper housing)
if this fails you get higher fuel pressure at idle than required.

Cheers guts thanks for all the information & advice - as it turns out no chance to look at the car today due to household plumbing problems !

Still will make an attempt again tomorrow and hope to at least discover the cause?

Vibration from the front end. 40 and above. Recent nut problem tightened and it went away. 3/4 inch jobbies on the ball joint. Must be sommit else now. Wheel off time and believe me, its a mare to do here. A pox on modern house builders and their idea of garages, may the flea's of a thousand camels infect their exit holes.

Me drive is quite steep as well.

Ste

Rememebr the lad who had it before me AND from new, got the same problem as now AND after several visits to isolate the prob, they told him it was as it had been from new. Look in the files - there's stuff there re: efforts to resolve "misfire". But WHO DECIDES what IS & what ISN'T a "misfire, please

Sorry to hear your havin trouble with your nuts Jeff - sort of thing probably something best dealt with alone in a private confined space, what?

Seriously though hope its an easy fix and you can find enough room somewhere in the local area to swing a spanner, mate.

Jim - this is not the usual odd momentary misfire which has always cleared itself within a few minutes - this is 4 & 5 cylinders down and constantly trying to stall, almost all the time below about 2,500rpm making the car virtually undrivable at anything below 40 - 50mph!!!
Has never shown any sign of anything like this in a year of daily driving up until I got off the ferry in St Malo last week.

Righty o, Sunday update

From cold (overnight) the car runs perfectly until water temp reaches approx 85/90 deg then it seems to be "overfuelling" under braking or cornering (as you come off the power).
It then behaves as if several plugs are not firing and is slow to pick up, stuttering and occasionally popping through exhaust.
Once warmed up it will not tick over without some throttle and is only really happy at or above 2,500rpm.

This happend yesterday too.

Have cleaned the stepper motor and replaced with PTFE tape to seal checked wiring connectors to stepper and hotwire air flow meter and all seem OK - stepper motor can now be heard clicking as ignition is turned on or off, so assume this OK?

Cannot find any air leaks but it is difficult when car wont idle.

Could it be the coolant temp sender or throttle position switch?

In any case further investigation is beyond my facilities so will be seeking proffesional help.

Any ideas as to where I can take it in the Midlands to get it sorted on Monday?
I think I need someone like Mark Adams but he is too far away I believe?

If it's come on suddenly then I'd start looking for something come adrift. There are various vacuum lines around the back of the plenum that could cause trouble if they came off, especially the vac line to the fuel regulator. Getting better with revs may be an illusion, a misfire would normally be more obvious at lower revs and appear to 'smooth out' as the revs rise. If it improves under acceleration and gets worse as you ease off that would definitely tend to suggest an air leak problem. Also check all the HT leads are securely fitted to the plugs, if these pop off you can get a rattling fit causing a misfire that comes and goes.
