I hope i am getting this right:

In the old days, posts in internet forums hat a "Saturday, August 11, 09:23am" kind of "time-stamp". Then, things changed to "Saturday, August 11" or even "today", "earlier today", "yesterday".

Is this for data protection reasons, as in "I know what you did last summer"?

Can somebody explain?

Depends on the forum, doesn’t it?

I’ve been on two today; PH and TZ-UK. The former doesn’t have the time stamp, the latter does.

I think it's just to make it easier for people to figure out how old a post is.

I'm sure that the info is stored down to the millisecond (at least), but it's just how the admin for the forum or website chooses how to format it?

had this a few years ago, a building management system at a bank.

someone forgot to do something and didnt want to do it as it was time stamped... I suggested jokingly to adjust the windows time clock on the PC....this would have been way back 2001 2002 and it was a johnston controls system....

Anyways he did it un beknowingly to me... and next day I was in said basement with boss and we were walking and i could hear one of the fresh air intake fans wasnt running.... we looked at each other and said that strange... I dont know if he heard the penny drop or not but I was back at that BMS and checking the time clock and making a few adjustments...

got a hold of the giy a couple of days later and mentioned it to him, something along the lines of if you do that again make sure you change the clock back to the right time.... pffttttt

It was just another thing that changed as forum software got smarter.

PH is a bit of an oddity in that is it just a message board and nothing else.

Commercial software especially started going in heavy with scripts in the late 00s to make the user experience more fluid and make website owners feel like they were getting value for money (e.g. being able to post without loading a new page) over the free/open source alternatives that had a decent core and growing community mod support.

There was a time where a forum that said a post had been made 'yesterday' as opposed to '13th September 2020' appeared the smarter and more user-friendly option and perhaps was the one killer feature that caused someone to renew their commercial license rather than switch to a free option.

It didn't take long for others to catch up of course, but no one was going to regress.
