My ex wife has a 2014 Toyota Verso with the BMW N47D16 engine. It has only done around 40K miles, most of which will be short stop/start trips. An engine code appeared recently which I checked which revealed

P0016 - Crank-Cam position correlation

Engine isn't apparently making any funny noises and runs fine. However, the service light came on during Covid and the oil wasn't changed so I am guessing it has done 20K miles on this oil (18k mile service intervals)

It is going in to a garage tomorrow to be looked at, but what are the chances this engine has suffered from cam chain stretch?

Maybe none. The issue is the chain comes off/breaks and the only warning signs have been a ing noise. Your issue sounds more like a sensor issue

Apparently when it was scanned the following codes appeared

P1443 - Particulate Filter Overload
P0016 - Crank Position Sensor
P06B9 - Cylinder 1 Glow Plug Circuit
P06B8 - Cylinder 2 Glow Plug Circuit

The garage (Non main dealer) changed the oil and filter and cleared the codes. £262.51 with a "Will require further investigation if warning light reoccurs" caveat.

I just don't believe that machines magically fix themselves, I am sure they will come back.

Hmm the particle filter is the DPF being overloaded, could be a sensor or generally it is full due to short journeys and not getting enough of a run.

Is it making any noise from the rear of the engine at bulkhead rattling at startup or noise pulsing where it is bouncing off the chain around 1500 - 2k rpm?

The glowplugs appear to have a fault, if it was the glowplug module then all would be inactive.

Give the short stops and the particle clogging warning, I'd be taking it for a good long run on the motorway to get the particle filter nice and see if that sorts it out. I thought the N47 gave filter warning light if it was getting clogged up; not sure on the Toyota implementation of it though.

Get the glow plugs fixed first as that bound to cause the DPF to flag warnings. If fixing those issues still leave the DPF flagging errors then go to a Good DPF cleaning company. Thats one that does not try and fob you off with triggering a regen

Sounds like 2 issues, glow plugs not working causing DPF to become clogged.

Crank/cam correlation sounds like timing chain stretch.

Does it rattle on start up ?

Well, as no surprise to anybody the warning light came back on showing all the codes again. The local garage have now diagnosed chain stretch and don't want to touch it with a bargepole.

I agree with replacing the glow plugs immediately.

But who to trust with replacing the chain, they are based in Surrey. I have found the following places but they are miles away

https://burchmotorworks.co.uk/performance-and-main...

https://kmkautos.co.uk/2016/09/14/n47-timing-chain...

No rattle on start up apparently but I have not listened myself.

There are 3 chains in total, On a Mini budget £1500 as the engine needs to come out, i would expect it to be the same with the Toyota. Also budget for clutch as the gearbox needs to come out too.

Clear the codes on the way to WeBuyAnyCar?
