Fast and fun for £33-38k

Hey guys
For the first time in my working career I no longer need to do a 25+ mile each way daily commute, so i've sold my 520d with the plan to finally get something thats focused more on speed and fun rather than practicality and MPG. As a bit of background:
Most of my past cars have all been 2l diesels. Had an Insignia, Passat, Audi A6, BMW 520d.
Theres only me and the wife so doesn't need to be family friendly. Shes got a BMW 120 if we need boot space.
She likes the BMW so naturally I have been thinking BMW M4 Comp but im open to anything that will make me smile when I see/drive it.
Age wise i'd prefer 2015 at the oldest but ideally 2016 onwards if I can. This would be the most i've spent on a vehicle so I guess warranty if appropriate would be factored into the cost.

Well that won’t make him smile when he sees it will it? Unless he closes his eyes. It’s a 4 door rep mobile, exactly what he has finally been able to get away from.The M2 is a fantastic little car, but you already have a 120 so it’ll be a bit similar aesthetically.
981 Cayman S is, again, a great car, sounds fantastic, looks ok (IMO) you’ll have your own, but unless you are happy to go independent some of the costs from Porsche are laughable.
If it were me I’d be looking at a Lotus Evora or if you can live with a little less luxury a S3 Exige, you’ll ‘just’ squeeze something in 2015 onwards with your budget. You’ll have relatively low running costs and glacial depreciation at that sort of age.
Anything other than the Porsche / Lotus will suffer from heavy depreciation, especially the M4 (look at older M4 / M3 prices, same for AMGs).

So in order - M2 i'd just assumed for same or similar money the M4 was better but thats with little knowledge and probably judging book by its cover because i'm used to larger cars. Is there is a reason you'd advise one over the other?
Lotus - I've never remotely considered owning cars like this, but its quite refreshing to now be able to consider it. I'm 6ft4 do you see that being a problem at all and are they usable all year round? Quick look on Autotrader shows a lovely 2016 orange Elise thats bottom of my budget or a 2015 Cayman S right in the middle. Hadn't considered these before so i'd have to try find some local ones as I dont think i've seen them in person before either.
Tesla Model 3 i think you need 40k+ and thats for the most entry level model so I assumed it was going to be above what i'd like to spend. Certainly the whole iPad thing appeals though as im 31 and work in tech so its a natural consideration.

I wouldn’t get a bmw if that’s the daily driver as well.
Evora or boxster would be my choice - owned both and would probably lean to the boxster just because it is convertible. Both great cars.

Re the M2, I’ve had an F10 M5, an OG M2 and a 987 Cayman
I’d go back to the M2 every time for fun and sense of occasion
When I bought the M5, the M2 has just came on sale and I was underwhelmed on paper.
I then tried one a few years later and wow, it’s a special car. I haven’t tried an M4 but many rate the M2 as more fun.
I now have a Tesla Model 3 performance, which is great, the M2 is the only car that tempts me back to ICE.

Would you get the 718, Boxster/Cayman S in budget yet?, driven one and I think they’re great, don’t care about people being negative about the flat 4 turbo, 350 BHP in a great handling 2 seater is fun.
I also really like the Model 3 but as you say the budget is only going to get you a standard one, you need about £50k for a Performance at the moment, I will be buying one in 3 years or so when they’ve hopefully depreciated a good bit!.

He said he wanted a fun car though. An Audi as a fun car wouldn’t ever be on my list. You get a car that's in warranty, no MOT to worry about, but also a fast, fun car that can do, motorway cruising, city pootling and back road hooning.

I think my 520d was the fastest car i've owned at nearly 8 seconds 0-60 so I think everything you've all mentioned beats that on the speed front on normal roads. I
I didn't like my A6 both in terms of finding the drive very boring to drive and the infotainment system very basic for that type of car but i imagine a 2019 S3 has improved on that. I'd probably find it hard to return to Audi over BMW's equivilent but i've not tried the quattro which YouTube tells me is popular. Apple Carplay would be great as well given i'm an iPhone user but thats far from a must have.
I'd written off the Tesla as i'll be looking to purchase soon so assuming nows just not the time. As another poster said lets see in a couple of years
