Why BAME?

As I understand it, BAME is an acronym for Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic.

What I’d like to know is why BAME? Not just ME?

Like LGBT (etc) means "everyone but straight people", BAME means "everyone but white people".

It's a handy way of dividing society in two.

In my opinion it is rather offensive to jumble all these colours, cultures and creeds in to one generic acronym.

Also creates this kind of white vs BAME mentality which again is not very helpful in creating a harmonious society.

I dunno. I think it's as johnnytheboy and HappyClappy are saying- having any useful word or acronym in circulation which is a catch-all term for basically everybody who isn't white, if you think about it, is a bit of a 'white-centric' device. It leads lazy people to think that there are white people and 'other people' rather than just 'people'. It supports an 'otherness' towards both sides, and clumsily chucks all of the minority ethnic groups from into one bracket which isn't accurate.

Why do we need such a term? Not a pointed question by the way, nor is it directed at anybody.

why is there any need at all to compartmentalise people into different groups?

However true it is in isolation to say that 'all lives matter', in the current environment that statement carries negative connotations and should be avoided.

The same sentiment with different words is fine. the problem with 'all lives matter' is its similarity and co-incidence with the widespread use of the similar 'Black lives matter' message, such that some people interpret them as opposing messages even though taken at face value they aren't.
