Thanks to my car being long in the tooth, and me fancying a change I’m on the lookout for another car. Due to covid and a house move I’m doing less frequent but longer journeys. At present I do a 1 and a half hour round trip (70 miles total) 2 or 3 times a week. This may pick up if we all return to work in which case that journey will be more like 5 times a week. The round trip is about one third town driving, two thirds on good stretches of NSL A Roads.
I only want a manual gearbox, but would take petrol or diesel. Small or mid sized (no 2 seaters unfortunately) rather than a barge due to limited on street parking and preference! Needs to be something with a mild amount of shove, nothing silly but then again anything puny wouldn’t suffice. Ideally looking at 2015 or newer, budget £10k max. The market seems to have ground to a near halt lately so I’m not exactly spoilt for choice. I started off thinking of warm hatches like a Ceed GT or a Leon 1.8 TSi but there’s very few about so I’m happy to broaden my horizons. Maybe one of the many 130bhp ish diesel family hatchbacks would do the job?

Kia Proceed GT - 210BHP 1.6 petrol
Mazda 3 2.2d
Skoda Octavia VRS 2.0 Petrol. You can even get the estate version.
There are a lot of others like the Kia Ceed GT-Line or Vaux Astra etc. Pretty much on your budget you have a wide arrange of cars.
What I found when looking for a motorway cruiser were I looked at the Kia Ceed 1.4d (114bhp i think) it had good enough grunt for say 50mph speed limits but above that seemed a little slow to react. Was a nice car but with me on the motorway a lot I got a more powerful car.
For you if you aren't doing motorway daily then it's probably enough.

All the above are going to be a reliable comfortable set of wheels that'll see you right especially as those long drives become more frequent.
I'd say go to a car Supermarket to see which floats your boat for me it's the Focus with the Megane next & the DS5 & 308 joint third.
