Evening,

Thinking about replacing our Honda FRV (12 years old,
2.2 diesel. Probably one of the better cars we’ve owned: practical for family of 5, comfortable for long distances, reliable - other than routine services/wear and tear items, has cost us nothing over the 12 years. Half tempted to keep it for longer, but needs a bit of work over the next few months: new clutch/dmf, new discs/pads, new tyres, another full service due etc - the cost of these is disproportionate to the value of the vehicle).

Our other car that I use for regular commuting and will be keeping is a v40 d4.

Requirements:
Occasional use for commuting couple of times/week (30 miles round trip). Regular longer distances a couple of weekends a month (motorways 300-400mile round trip).
Comfortable space for family of 4 (one less child at home now) - needs good rear legroom, decent boot for sports equipment and holiday gear, prefer bhp >140.
Reliable - will probably keep it for a while.
Budget up to approx 23k.

Not bothered abound brands, prefer: new to 12 months old.
Have owned diesels for 20 years, and still like them, but accept the wind is probably blowing in a different direction.

Think we’ve been a bit spoiled by the Honda - it overs most of the above, but in a relatively compact package. I’d buy another if they still made it.

The children like the Citroen grand space tourer, but not sure if it’s a bit too big for us. I don’t mind the Citroen aircross models, but not sure about Citroen reliability.
Looking at Honda: CRV may be a bit too big, wife hates the civic styling, unsure about the HRV.

Octavia/mondeo may be an option, but wife prefers a slightly higher ride height and likes the Mazda cx 5 (and she will be the main driver). I’ve thought about the CW touran.

Any suggestions?

Would the new Ford Puma be one to consider? Boot space apparently decent as has split floor.

New XC60 & V60 are out of budget.
Loads of V90s within budget but may be too big.

A friend of mine does big miles in his CX-5 and enjoys it. He’s had no major problems and it ticks all his boxes which are similar to yours.

Also consider a Kia Sportage if you’re looking for something higher up. They’re well built cars, and I find them great to drive with adequate space for the kids and a dog.

Will have a further look at the Mazda/XC40. Hadn’t thought about the Puma.

Ref the Citroen aircross range and spacetourer - are they just about as reliable as anything else?

Why not go for a normal Space Tourer rather than the Grand Space Tourer their reliability is on par with anything else out there.

Still haven’t got round to sorting new car.
Any +ves/-ves reliability wise to Ford Kuga - in particular 1.5 Petrol v 2.0tdi
Boot space doesn’t seem the greatest.

How many miles will you do per year? Are you still heading up North every couple of weeks? Or will you go back to doing those journeys? Answer those & your petrol or diesel debate is sorted.

Approx 12k/year. Usually a decent run [75 miles] at least once a week. Longer trips 150-200 miles once a month.
Quite like the torque of the diesel, though may be time to switch.
Alas wife prefers manual, and she will be main driver.
