Hot gauge but cool engine
Discussion
went for a ride in my 1999 griff 500 today and the temp reading in the car rose over the gauge. pulled over and left to cool, after 30 mins temp gauge still over 120 mark but coolant level ok and luke warm. car is running normal and fans are still cutting in and out as normal. took the car home, header tank low, topped up, blead radiator of air, still gauge rose slowly to 120+. anyone know why? only thing I can think of is last week I degreased the engine with gunk and sprayed down with hose, maybe effecting something , but don't know where thermometer is.
The sender for the guage is just behind the distributor. It has a single wire going to it. If you unplug it the guage should go down. So in order for the guage to read high the sender must of gone short or a wire shorted along the way.Mine went and the guage read low, i used the spare sender which you should also have on top of the head. Of course assuming the car is not actually overheating.

In order for Gunk to work effectively, the engine has to be hot. But, if you rinsed it off with a hose, I can only hope the engine WAS'NT hot!
Hot engines don't like cold water
Not to mention an alloy V8. Sorry this has nothing to do with your present woe, but just thought I'd warn you.

if the readings are starting off correctly, ie moving to normal - normally, then slowly continuing, i'd say it is over heating. sit it the garage and start it up from cold. it should go to normal slowly rise untill the fans cut in and cool it down as normal. if the fans cut off the temp should be ok.
an otter switch on the swirl or radiator works independantly of the guage.if its running hot the fans will stay on.
my guage is fed from behing the powersteering resevoir, one wire on it with two droping resistors in the wire to calibrate to guage.
