Also iOS 14 now has a translation app. Just type in and translate.

Think of Google Translate in a similar fashion to spell check - the words could be spelt correctly but the context in which they are used could be completely wrong and it would never be picked up until it's too late.

Google Translate is good and getting better but fails to translate context which in some languages is vital and/or translates literal meaning. For example the term 'fly-tipping' is translated in some languages as 'to tip a fly' (as you would a waiter).

Google Translate is good and getting better but fails to translate context which in some languages is vital and/or translates literal meaning. For example the term 'fly-tipping' is translated in some languages as 'to tip a fly' (as you would a waiter).

Not fly related, but I would quite happily pay all the Daddy Long Legs in my house to ps off!

Of course, it is context dependant, but it depends on the use, if it's a translation of a general letter then I'd use Google myself, you can even scan the document on your phone with the Translate App.

But if it's anything Legal / Money related then of course it would be prudent to pay for the appropriate services.

You know those instructions you get from Chinese manufacturers that when translated into English end up being overly descriptive to a level that's comedic? That's the result of Google Translate in reverse.

If (as I have) you need to translate text into different languages that you hope will motivate a change in behaviour, you have to understand the nuances of certain languages; knowing that some words have different meaning and resonance depending on where in the country it will be read and by whom. Google is good but has yet to master colloquialisms, cultural and regional differences of the same language.

If you want to see what something in another language says, use Google. But if you want to engage professionally with someone in a different language, you need the services of a professional translation service and those who speak the language.
