Hey guys hope you can help - I recently bought a new desktop PC - it came with Win10 Pro installed, after the initial MS setup etc. Every time the pc re-starts, my personal details & email address etc etc. are shown on the opening sign-in screen. Is there any way of removing these details so the pc starts up with a blank screen or a selected desktop picture for example on the sign in screen?
>
I also own a Win10 laptop which open's and on the sign in screen there's a nice scenic MS provided picture, I'd like to get the desktop to do this. - how do I achieve this in simple layman terms pleasesmile
The pc has so far defied all my attempts to achieve thisfrown

Has your email address been set as your username?

Mine just has "Bacon" where your address is.

Your email address is being shown because that's your sign-in info - if you use a Microsoft Account then it should just show your name.

In order to get the picture you need to go to Lock Screen settings and then choose Windows Spotlight under Background.

Found this on a MS Forum which should solve your issue:

The account needs some kind of name to show (it can't be only a picture, there must always be a text name). But since there is no actual name, it is required to show the email address as an account identifier.

Normally the account name should sync from your online account (http://account.microsoft.com), but you can also do this: type "NETPLWIZ" into your Run box, double-click your account listed there, and make sure the "Full Name" field is set -- then that should be what is used on the login screen.

Thanks for replying
Why is it - my email address shown on opening screen? To initially log onto the pc during startup I have to sign in with a password?
I don't like the email address displayed on [pre-sign in screen] surely the sign in info PC username etc. WHATEVER IT IS ought to be hidden??- I have to get rid of it - so how do I do it simply - If I have to change it to something else like 'Rene 7' OK I can live with that - how do i do it?
I'm sure I was never asked during the initial pc setup for a PC username. I know the older win 7 asks for a username during installation, my win10 version didn't,I would never use an email address as a username.
Otherwise my old Win 7 pro is going to be installed on the new pc. Why do MS spoil a perfectly good product [Win7] with a downgraded win10????

Do a clean reinstall and don't enable the WiFi until it has completely finished the install.

It will ask you for a user name and password during the installation which you can self-select.

Congratulations, you've installed an unsupported OS that is vulnerable to security exploits and doesn't get patched. Win7 was good in it's day but things have moved on.

Why not just follow the instructions that I provided? rolleyes

Yeah Win7 is a bit risky unless you're really savvy.

And you're talking to someone who owns two Win7 Pro retail copies and is considering turning one to a Win10 Pro retail key!

You could still very easily get hit by Wannacry/variant on SMB unless you've been smart enough to get all the upgrades and check they're in place.

Also not sure if Defender on Win7 is getting updates either.

I still run a 7 machine, but it's increasingly as a standalone on a LAN with a really tight firewall and usage purposes... not as a daily.

You need to figure out how to make 10 work for your needs.

Setting a username (so it uses it rather than email address) seems like a simple fix.

Oooor, don't use your email as a user.

The proper setup for decent security and user obfuscation is...

Set up with any old username (don't use an MS account)

Add a new named admin account, anything, just use keepass or similar to make up some credentials.

Disable main admin account.

Change your username to a user, not admin.

Don't let Windows try link or convert your username account to an MS account.

Use a new account for anything in Windows that needs an online presence (like payment details or app store stuff), and ring fence that account for just Windows stuff.
