i know the topic of broad band modem/router/wifi has been done to death! but i just want to get a some views on this particular model or other similar products.

the netgear seems to get good reviews but i am quite tempted by the linksys WAG 54G. Billion myGuard 7500GL seemsto get good reviews as well, but i've not heard of the company before!

anyother products worth considering?

cheers

If you look on ebuyer there are customer reviews that may help. By following them I went for Netgear stuff. It took 10 mins to install and configure the whole lot (before xp sp2 killed it- lol)

Linksys stuff is generally pretty good, they are now owned by Cisco who have been building routing stuff for years.

Most of the Linksys stuff is all running an embedded version of Linux these days and so you get people developing alternative firmware for them.

A tip for buying, the cheapest place I could find for buying a WRT54GS was actually www.amazon.co.uk - well worth checking them out before you buy.

I just ordered one from Amazon, free postage and £87 with a free pcmcia or usb adaptor. My neighbour has one that seems to be OK and I will let you know how I get on installing mine.

Thanks for the replies, i shall have a look at amazon and ebuyer later on today.
falcemob, i would be interested to hear how you get, keep me posted, thanks.

I just hoping that my Asus A4000G laptop with the built in 802.11g wiresless connects to which ever modem/router i get!

Be aware that the 834gt will not currently do vpn gateway endpoints where as older 834 and 834g models will if you use v2 firmware.

Apart from that it is an excellent piece of kit, just a shame i had to swap mine with a mate to get an older 834g because i needed to use the vpn endpoint capability

OK, mine arrived over the weekend, it took me about 2 minutes to configure once I read the instructions properly and actually followed them.
I ordered mine with the free PC card and that took another couple of minutes to configure on my daughter's laptop.
Everything is still running OK with no problems so far.

Hi - The 834GT looks the business, but can you confirm that it definetly will not work when trying to connect to a VPN. It means it's a no-no for me, but seems such a basic mistake for netgear to make. Have you heard if this is planned to be fixed ?

i got the GT working yesterday, it works straight out of the box. got three laptops workings a couple of minutes later. The netgear unit seems to be a very nicely built device very happy with it. only time will tell how reliable it is.

it does VPN passthrough as per nearly every other consumer router ie. you have some VPN client software on your PC from work etc and it connects to a VPN server on your work network ...passing through the DG834GT just fine.

If you are talking about setting up a VPN between 2 routers etc and actually terminating the VPN end point on the router then no - you will need a higher end business class router to do this.

90% time people just want passthrough.......
