What’s the best way to defer jury service ?

It always amuses me that potentially, Darren, from Kwik Fit could be deciding on whether the defendent is guilty of tax evasion or tax avoidance, for example.
I know they are strict on trying to get out of jury service but I would have thought being hundreds of miles away at uni would have been acceptable. I had my supervior write a letter stating how I was vital to the team to get out of my jury service.

I think starting University ought to be a good reason to defer jury duty. The first week is pretty essential at getting settled in and making new friends. Perhaps a letter from the Uni explaining why it is essential that she should be there might help sway the appeal?

t an experience it actually is. I got off with it 3 times by saying I was self employed and literally couldn't take time off.
Now I'm retired I wouldn't mind doing it out of interest but I bet I never get asked again.
Back to the OP I really can't see why she's not been excused in the first place. I'd be surprised if an appeal wasn't successful especially if she piles on the 'I must attend the start of uni or I'll never catch up'

As for age, if we allow 18 year olds to vote, pay taxes, get shot at in the army, get sent to jail for crimes etc, then we can hardly say no to having them on juries.
In a better run country, everyone would receive some basic training about stuff like jury duty in the last year at school.
When I was legally banned from doing jury service I received three jury summonses. I had to write to explain that I wasn't allowed to say yes. Since the ban was lifted, I haven't had a jury summons.

I have addressed one jury (in a civil damages trial that involved the liberty of the subject and so had a jury) . It felt odd - a bit like talking to a horse. I am still, however, a giver of two cheers for the system.

Based on the only jury I have served on, if I was in the dock I would far rather have a jury made up of people similar to the 18 year old who was serving at the same time as I was, rather than the elderly folks who were on the jury.One listed to the evidence, whilst the other group - well frankly they were more interested in the jigsaws in the waiting room and had already made up their mind when they took their seats.
And that was for a defendant who was the same shade as they were.

I don't suppose I ever will now as I am 71 years old, so deaf I have to keep asking my wife what's going on when watching a film, and would have to put my hand up every half an hour to ask the judge if I could go for a wee.
I just can't understand people who are able to do it, but are unwilling to excercise their duty in a democratic and free society.

Nor can I, but bear in mind that that quite a few people just don't buy into the idea of society at all, or see society as a one way thing, from which they are free to take but to which they need never give. PH is a distorting mirror. If you read across the forums here, especially the politics bit and sometimes this bit, you can get the impression that possession of a driving licence makes for a remarkable amount of "**** you, I'm alright, Jack" selfishness, but the PH population is an odd, self selecting bunch of car weirdos. Maybe the real World is worse. I dunno.
