DIY HiFi - ever made your own gear ?
Discussion
I've been mooching around online looking at poweramps.
Don't really need one but curious about how different my system would sound with one, and quite impressed with how well the silver MA 100s cope at louder volumes.
Can I go louder (when the family is out) ???
Anyway I came across these DIY Hypex monoblocks at between £500-600 each -

Forunately they can be made to work with RCA inputs as well.
They are reviewed very well -

The video accompanying theese DIY amps shows the wole process as being really very simple with very little soldering.
Any of you guys ever made your own amps etc?
How difficult is it for a clutz like me ?

There is a guy on AVForums who build a power amp using some similar modules to those. He isn't particularly electronics minded, though he has built speakers and subs before.
I looked into it myself, but TBH once I'd priced it all up I figured I might as well buy some ready made ones from Nord. I've previously worked as an electronics engineer on audio equipment, so maybe I'm just bored with the idea of building stuff though.

I'm thinking I might add a 4 channel Nord NC125 amp to power my Atmos channels unless a matching 4 channel Arcam PA turns up (since I already have a 7 channel Arcam for the main speakers/surrounds).

Ooooohh the Nord stuff looks pretty convincing.
Their website, less so...
Could I justify one of the smaller stereo power amps.... ????
Dual Mono NC500 for £979 incl power supply, but another £50 for the 12V trigger.
Even the smaller ones might be too much for my MA Silver 100s though.
Think they are rated to about 120W.
Thanks for the heads up on Nord. Looks like there are a few builders selling Hypex or other class D amps.
Apollon in Slovenia. Audiophonics in France also do similar stuff.
Hmmmm <rubs chin>

Yes the website isn't great, but the owner Colin pops up on AVForums from time to time answering questions and a friend of mine has one of the fancier MK3 amps with the different op amp option (can't remember which) and speaks highly of it. Heard good things of Apsilon as well, though it depends on your location whether it's better to buy from the UK/Nord or from Apsilon in case of warranty issues (not that they are likely to be fair).
