Hatchback will not open 2014 polo gt

As per the title my wife's Polo GT Blue 2014. the tailgate will not open, both doors work fine but tailgate refuses. Have been in the back opened it manually spread plenty of lubricant and cleaner all around the lock etc. checked all connections for tightness, still no luck.
Would I be right in saying that there is a lock and also solenoid attached to the VW handle that you use to open the tailgate, I ask because everything seems to work ok mechanically, but after using the keyfob to unlock the car normally you lift the VW badge there is a click and the tailgate opens; it does not click now and just refuses to do anything.
Any experience or help appreciated before I get shafted!
