Hi all,

Throughout my car history I have typically indulged in the ‘modern classic’ type of car with anything from a e30 325i to a S2000 alongside an assortment of dull company cars in recent times.

I have recently been getting a hankering for something from 1960-80 to enjoy and tinker with, it doesn’t have to be anything special but just have a charm of it’s own and be easy for me to work on....i don’t want to spend too much. It would replace my clio 182 and go alongside my 996 911 in the garage.

Criteria is:
1) £5k or a little more But the less the better
2) Ideally not a British roadster because most of them don’t appeal except a tr6.
3) easy to maintain
4) A project is fine But more of a rolling project ideally.

I know the budget makes things difficult but any advice is appreciated...I really like the idea of a VW TYPE 3 or similar.

Could have your pick of Land Rovers for that budget? Genuinely useful as a tool and plaything as well.

I had considered a series 3 or similar as I have owned a td5 Defender previously but they all seemed to be restored examples at £15k when I looked.

Type 3s have gone up slowly but are still available as runners for under £5k. A choice for under £10k.
You and I clearly have similar taste in cars, so although a British roadster, it has TR6 ish styling and can be bought running for £5k - Jensen Healey?

How about a little later than 1980, a Porsche 944?

Are there any left under £5000 still?

Go for the 924S, the same car underneath as the early 944 and you should get a tidy one for that price.
Good owners club too,who are not so hung up on the Porsche badge snobbery

Most things have shot up price-wise over the past 5-10 years, so whilst there used to be a lot available at that price point, there’s hardly anything now that isn’t a shed/in need of a lot of work.

In my opinion, the best and most interesting useable classic you can be a half-decent example of at that price is the Reliant Scimitar. SE5A would be the best model, but would buy on condition alone at that price.

Any thoughts on the Rover P6?
