Im 54 and never really been troubled by this until the last year or so.I've noticed after a drink with my mates, say 3 beers and 7 or 8 vodkas i can't sleep at all all night,my heart is racing like hell and i can't settle.
I've never been bothered with this before and i'm just wondering if this is maybe showing up some other underlying health issue that'ds maybe manifested itself in me over the last year or so?
Incidentally i can go months without drink, even a year when i take the mood, but at the moment i might go out once a week, strictly no more than this.

As ever with such threads - speak to your GP! Unless he/she is a total ahole and incompetent they will not judge you a time waster for this and nobody here will be able to tell you anything that will render you not speaking to your GP anything other than a bad idea.

Alcohol intake can trigger cardiac arrhythmia e.g. paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

Alternatively, your GP may just see the answer as reduce your alcohol intake, removing the symptoms, requiring no investigation, and improving your health.

12 units of alcohol in one session when the NHS suggested weekly consumption is 14. Not difficult to guess the advice likely to be given by your GP.

It’s a toxin and it accelerates anyone’s heart rate who drinks it, even young healthy people. The older you are, naturally the worse the effects. You didn’t sleep like a log either as it actually interrupts the natural sleep patterns, you just won’t have known.

There's an Atrial Fibrillation thread on here, have a read.

Personally I would say knock it on the head for a minimum of two weeks. See how you feel after that. If there are still concerns, talk to the doc and get yourself a Kardia device. Will save a lot of fannying about.

Glad it's not just me then.

I had a very nasty flu like illness about 20 years ago, and ever since then my heart races in the night on occasion, but certainly worse after drinking.

Attempted to draw this to the attention of my doc at the time and was parked on beta blockers for a while then told to stop.

Well thank god i'm not doing it every week then eh?and as i've said i didn't have these symptoms a year ago,so whatever the gp says about 14 units 'definetly affecting me' wouldn't have applied to me last year, would it?

I've only drank once a week for the last three weeks so not really going mad on it! ;-)and i never drank before that for 8 months, don't drink anything in the house either,no wine, anything.
I'll have a look at that thread you suggested, thanks.

Are you sure its not anxiety. As you know alcohol is a depressant and its easy for your mind to fall into a cycle of getting anxious when you drink - or after in my case. If I go past my limit I waked up with classic anxiety symptoms.

Just sounded very familiar!
