Thinking about buying a 1973 Day date, had a look on Crono24. Never bought a second hand watch before so don't know if prices are realistic or not. What should I be able to get a 73' day date on a leather strap for?

c24 are asking prices, so deduct 10-15%

Strap means "original bracelet missing", cheaper than full set

Thanks for that, I like the look of them on a leather strap anyway so good news re price.

Wait - just saw "Day Date". Vintage DDs are nice but you will never be able to find a matching (condition-wise) bracelet. You are aiming for a very niche kind of look, if re-sale matters, keep it in mind.

"Your" ref would be 1803. I would guess for 6-7k you could pick up an ok one.

I think a 70ies YG DD looks very nice on a polished black croc strap. Go for it!

Or one of the rare WG versions, on a dark navy (almost black) strap. WG will be much more expensive.

Also think about the matching buckle - I am not a Rolex expert enough to know whether they made them in precious metals.

Apreciate the input, not concerned about resale as would go to my son when I'm gone smile

Something like this would be what I'm looking for though the dial colour is a bit light.

Is this what you mean by Rolex buckle?

Re Chrono24 verified seller- is this 100% guarantee of buying a genuine item? I see they have a feedback system a bit like ebay etc.

Like a previous poster noted, 6-7k should get you a good one.

Most of the value is in the bracelet, and without that you could even get one at 5-6 if your lucky.

These came with a precious metal bracelet, so bear in mind that a watch missing this has had its strap sold for scrap. This affects its value and desirability in the same way that a missing box and certificates will, but more.

As above, I think a DD with a missing bracelet kinda misses the point.

Beware some have fake bracelets as well. I've never seen that dial before either, looks a bit frankenwatch.

I would (and did) go for a 16013 Datejust with the correct jubilee bracelet instead. Should be around half the price of a DD on leather too.

precious metal bracelets from 40 years ago will look shabby, unless it is a garage queen.
the vintage-rolex-on-a-leather-strap look is nice, even in yellow gold; i would also pick a YG datejust instead of a DD
