so, I was washing and polishing and shining the car, as you do, and thought about allow wheels and brake dust; that b*stard sticky black dust. It's a PITA to get off. Why, oh, why, can't we have teflon-coated non-stick alloy wheels? Is that feasible?

Give Bilt Hamber Auto Wheel cleaner a go and all your problems will be solved

I find regular wheel cleaning helps to keep the effects of brake dust down. If you let it build up, it becomes a bd to get off again. Iron X or Dragons Breath works well for particularly stubborn areas.

I've just had some wheels refurbished, and have, for the first time in my car history, sealed them with Wowos crystal sealant, which has had excellent reviews. The car's still on the ramp at home waiting for tyres, so can't comment yet on how accurate those reviews are. From what I read, I have high expectations.

Teflon and similar coatings have issues with very high temps (~250C and up). Not sure what temperature brake pads can get to, but I suspect it's rather warm...that might be one of the reasons.

The other is that they're fragile - anything metal/sharp will damage them. So unsuitable for stones being kicked-up, for example...

The best wheel cleaner out there but, my god, it has the worst smell. Stays in the nostrils for hours but at least your wheels will be sparkling.

Over lockdown I took my wheels off, machine polished them and gave them a coating of GTechniq C5 Wheel Armour. The brake dust pretty much blasts off with water now. It’s amazing stuff.

Teflon is very fragile. As I understand it, there's a sticky out lump on the molecule (or something - this is secondary school science and I'm 40!) that is what causes the non stick property of the material, but it's also very easily damaged. I want to say it's . Wheels spend their time in very harsh environments being battered by dust and crap, which would presumably knock off the sticky-outy science bit.

Or something. laugh

Teflon coated brake pads? Is that the future? If it helps with getting higher average speeds, I'm in.

You do know what the OP wants to keep off his wheels, right?

Or are you just being a dick?

Decent wheel cleaner (the aforementioned Bilt Hamber is indeed good stuff) and a suitable wheel sealant of some kind goes a long way to making it much easier to clean up.

Yes, it is clearly ridiculous. laugh As is calling someone a dick when it's clear to anyone with a sense of humour that it wasn't a serious comment. Which is why I ignored the dick! He sounds like less fun than lockdown........
