Hi, i have 15k for a used 4 series. Must be under 60k miles and not likely to be expensive to run. Ideally 5 years old or less. I will keep it for at least 4 years so want to get out right.

Cart will be for cruising to work (15 mile round trip) and longer journeys with small family at weekends. Less than 8k per year. I have a car for haring about at 8000 rpm and clipping apexes.

I assumed it would be a 20d automatic as they have balance of cruisyness, performance and economy and they are the most common by far. However, I drove a 320d auto at the local main dealer today and didn't gel with it.

So then I can looking at petrol. 320i ok. Should rev better than the diesel, though doesn't have the mid range shove. 28i looks to have very few disadvantages compared to 20i for a lot more performance.

Most magazines tested 20d or big engines so not much help.

So which engine, which gearbox and which trim level? Colour of you fancy it!

Thanks

If you can find one, 428i auto in blue with heated leather, ideally red. Pro nav is the only other option i'd want.

I wouldn't bother with a 420i petrol - the 420d is the better all rounder of those 2. I think they might be a little out of budget or you might have to do some searching/waiting for a good one, but I'd go 435i over a 428i. Marginally worse economy & running costs - granted, but a far better engine & overall experience.

It would (probably) be an M Sport coupe in black or blue for me, but some of the Luxury trimmed cars look pretty good and tend to be better looked after and not exposed to 'mods' in the same way.

Petrol will rev better the Diesels because deseils get the job done without revs. So diesel is 3-4.5k revs verse petrol 5-6.5k revs. to get the same job done. Petrol will be notably faster above 100mph and in every other way the diesel will be better. Diesel + Auto are the dream team as the gearbox is tuned in favour of diesel IMHO

Thanks for the replies. Agree with you both - blue is best.

I do like the look of the luxury but can't quite work out the spec they came with as the range was fairly quickly revised to just Sport and M-Sport.

Did order originally go SE, Sport, Luxury, M-Sport?

I don't like the red dashboard strip on most Sports.

Yes, I believe this was the spec order if memory serves me correctly. I’d avoid a Sport or SE. Although, anything other than an M Sport with a 6 cylinder is relatively rare. If you’re not in a rush, I’m sure you’ll find a good one (but maybe with a bit of budget creep).

You’d have to like red for this one! That dealer also seems to have an original BMW UK press car in Estoril Blue. Not sure if that would be a good thing or a bad thing!

The 20d is probably the better car considering performance and economy. However, doing 7 mile journeys each day won’t be great for it. 28i is your best bet. You should be able to find one that meets your criteria particularly if you are not set on an M Sport.

I'd be going for that press car personally. Full spec, HUD and a manual box.

Thanks for all the replies

I don't want a 435 (well I do, but I'm not going to buy one).

Just put a securing deposit on this one. Off to see it Saturday. Don't think it has the pro nav, which must make it one of the last Msports not to. Also its not blue, but I'm going off blue, especially Estoril blue.

They must have pulled the add on the basis of your deposit. From the URL, its a 428i?

Yes it's a 428i. It was still up earlier when I looked, but it has been pulled now as you say.

I just purchased an ‘18 3 series touring and got a 320i sport auto.

Engine is great, smooth and fast enough. I had a 520d until recently and prefer the petrol.

I ended up with the red stripe, before buying wasn’t keen, but I actually quite like it. It’s slightly metallic and lifts the black interior.

Yes. It's a 428i. M sport. Screen doesn't fill the whole "hump". Couple of inches of filling piece on either side.

We'll see on Saturday! Excited!

Evening

If Saturday doesn't go well, I recommend the 428i GC I traded in last month at Ocean BMW Torbay.

A bit more than £15K but I can vouch for the car. Blue, pro nav, beige leather, electric memory seats, MOT last March with no advisories, 18000 miles, just run in! Absolutely nothing wrong with it but this dealer had a G31 in exactly the spec I'd been looking for and their trade in, £14.2K, was easily the best compared with Sytner et al.

They have already reduced the price by £500.

Really liked it but there was a problem. I've put it in car buying but here is copy and paste ( can't work out how to link on phone).

Went to see car I had put deposit on. Knew it had "partial" service history but it turns out first service recorded was at 38k miles. Dealer just serviced car.

Car is 428i 52k miles. Good condition. 15,250. Dealer says price reflects partial SH.

I'm worried about engine being worn after 38k on dirty oil. Also future resale (in 4 years / 2 services time). "Partial" says to me "it might have missed one, or have a gap".

What do you think?
Is there anyway to see if it was serviced but not recorded?

Ring BMW UK. I can’t imagine a car entering a dealer in the network and not having its reg recorded But you need to know if it’s ever been on a private plate too.

Thanks for all the replies, especially this one! A bit of phoning around and detective work and it turned out it did have FSH, all with BMW main dealers. So I bought it.

Really please with it so far, but I've only driven it 20 miles so we'll see. .

Nice one! Can you get the iDrive updated to show service history?
