My wife is using an ipad at work and wants to be able to plug in a flash drive to transfer files from her home and work laptops to the ipad. She bought an adapter from the Apple store, possibly a USB-C to SD Card Reader or Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter but it asked her to download some extra software to be able to use it, which she can't do because software installations have been disabled by her organisation.

Is there anything else she can use, i.e. an adapter that would just recognise a flash drive plugged into it without any additional software? I didn't check the adapter before she sent it back, is it correct that it wouldn't have worked without installing something else?

I use the lightning to usb 3 camera adaptor which works fine. Make sure you get the larger one with the power port as the adaptor with just a usb connector doesn’t have enough power to run most flash drives. Just plug the flash drive into the adaptor, the adaptor into the iPad and plug it into a wall socket using your regular iPad charger and away you go. I have used the same adaptor to pull photos straight out of a camera.

An option without adaptors is iCloud, if you log into iCloud on the work computer and drop the files you need into it you can then pick them up on the iPad so long as you use the same Apple ID / log on at both ends. This can be an issue if work don’t let you access online storage.

Ah this makes more sense - they'd actually sold her a flash drive, so presumably it was trying to install drivers so it would work: https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/HNTM2ZM/A/sa...

She said the guy wasn't really listening to her answers so probably ended up selling her the wrong thing. Will try one of the cables.

Is there really not enough power to run a flash drive without plugging into the wall, even a little 5gb one?

There is a flash drive that’s usb on one end and lightning on the other, so it doesn’t need an adapter but that needs drivers installed and uses a specific app. I’ve not tried it as I already had a solution.

Unfortunately I have not found a flash drive yet that doesn’t need power to run, it’s a pain, I have used a small battery pack when I’m not near a plug socket. It just needs an extra little boost of power on the lightning connector, maybe USBC will be different......
