Hi All,

Currently my home network is setup as follows:

Sky Router > Network Switch > Unifi AP (with cloudkey controller)

I've now got a Unifi Gateway to add into this, with my understanding that the setup should be as follows:

Sky Router (Switch of DHCP) > Gateway > Network Switch

I can see the Gateway within the network, but it won't let me adopt it (and it has a different IP range from the AP (which I presume is currently getting it's IP from the Sky Router)).

If I switch off the DHCP on the Sky Router I lose access to everything and I can't ping the Gateway

Is there any way I can get the Gateway configured/adopted prior to switching off the DHCP on the Sky Router?

Cheers,
Phill

Ditch the sky router and just use a simple modem instead. A second hand openreach one or draytek will do. Then put in you ISP details in the gateway to connect.

You can change the IP address of the unifi gateway to match the range you are already using - a quick google should get you at the relavant unifi page. However, ideally you need to ditch the sky router completely as mentioned, let the unifi device do all your routing etc and buy an adsl modem.

Just done this, you need to connect the USG to your sky modem and then log in directly (connect your PC direct to the USG) to the USG. once you get the USG set up and connected to the internet you can then integrate it into your network. I had to reset my controller and start it from scratch at this point. You might find the USG might not connect to the SKY modem unless it is in bridge mode and connected via PPPOE.

Ok, great. Sounds like something to do when the kids are in bed!

Yep, like has already been said I would adopt while the network is still running properly, set the WAN config to match that of your provider and then remove the sky router and put a modem in place. Should be a neat and tidy solution.

Just connect to it directly if you’re having problems adopting it.

If you’ve bought it new then personally I’d return it as it’s end of life realistically - if used, no bother.

UDM and UXG (Beta) are the new lines.

I’d have a hard time recommending the UDM-Pro, personally. I believe the UDM has similar issues.

It’s fine when its up and working but an absolute pain when it isn’t and I wouldn’t want to inflict that on someone without a decent understanding of networking (no offence intended OP).

The USG has similar issues, it’s constantly in beta. Any update may (and often does) break something.

I’ve found the USG absolutely hates an unstable internet. On mine I’ve ended up taking the modem out of bridge mode and instead running double NAT but with a DMZ set in the outer router referencing the USG. Appears to be more stable that way, and my internal network doesn’t suffer every time the internet drops.

I’m also amazed that after years of requests, the controller still doesn’t allow you to view real-time stats per device. All those pretty graphs are a bit pointless if you can’t easily see what’s currently gone rogue and is hogging all the bandwidth.

I have the UDM and generally speaking it’s been fine but I’m on the “stable” firmware.

People are more likely to have issues the more ‘exotic’ your setup is, so if it’s just a simple flat network then it’ll be fine.

My UDM pro has been “fine” but it’s not without its quirks. It’s not the most user friendly or intuitive of devices.

That said, nothing else on the market can kind of get close to what it does for the price point.

UDMB seems to have less issues than UDMP - simply as there’s no SFP ports, no Protect/Talk etc, no HDD bay etc to go wrong.

I still want a USG replacement but they seem very reluctant to release one.

Ie, take the UDM, remove the WiFi, shrink the form factor and charge less!

This is the UXG line. Right now only the Pro rack mount is announced (unless I've missed something) but I expect there will be a non-Pro version too.

They took the UDM Pro, removed the HDD, embedded Controller, Talk etc - and then charged a heap MORE for it as UXG-Pro smile
