987 Cayman - space
Discussion
Hi all, I'd love one of these one day but I'm just having to assess the day-to-day livability of a Cayman for my usage.
This is going to sound like a rally random question, but how much space is there behind the engine, and is it usable? I am not talking about the boot, I'm talking inside the cabin. It looked like there is some space there on a video I saw on YT
Thanks in advance!

Somewhere to put a box of Scotties and maybe a hat?
So not enough room for a small dog then?
I was wondering if there was any way to get them in that area so they could see out the rear window. Very hard to see the interior layout back there, it's not photographed very often! So I was struggling to work out the layout. The 718 Cayman looks like it has quite a large rear window, but again, I had no idea of how it relates to the structure of the car inside
I figured the answer would be a no! But I'd never noticed it before so i thought I'd check

I looked at 987s when looking for a weekend car this year and the rear hatch space was one of my criteria for the same reason.
It partly depends on the size of your dog (small 'may' be doable if you mean terrier size), but bear in mind it is quite claustrophobic behind the engine - the space that a dog can see through is quite narrow even with the parcel cover removed and is pretty much forward only. There is no easy way for a dog to look through the rear.
Also bear in mind that the hatch space is directly behind the engine so can get quite warm. It is also the crumple zone. May also be a bit noisy but that is something I couldn't check...
All the information I could find was to use the passenger seat if you have a dog. In the end (for this and other reasons I settled on a 370z that can fit the dog in the rear hatch - two dogs now, so it is cosy). Not a recommendation, just what we ended up with.

I’m RAF I moved from Brize to waddington with all my kit. I had 1 large bag in the boot. Another large bag above the engine cover. Two large soft bags in the front trunk. Two large soft bags on the passenger floor and one on the passenger seat. My entire life minus TV, ironing board etc which I had shipped. But other than that it all moved in 1 load.
My wife was amazed at the amount of stuff it could take compared to her 370z.

Can you elaborate on "large bag above the edge cover"? What's the edge cover, and how big is the bag?My wife was amazed at the amount of stuff it could take compared to her 370z.

Sorry I have edited my original post I meant engine cover. To give you a rough idea I could fit 2 of the black bags in the back. 1 in the boot part and 1 on top of the engine cover behind the seat headrests.
I could then fit 2 of the combat rucksacks in the front (so long as they weren’t packed to the point of bulging.
Excuse the mess I need to tidy up. The black folder is A4 sized for scale.

Thanks for the help. My dog is smaller than that bag for sure. I'll only really know by seeing a car in the flesh. I think on top of the engine cover is probably best, provide I could secure him, at least a net to separate him from the cabin. He'd probably quite like the warmth!
