All,

My 997 has had problems lately. Replacing the alternator was an easy fix, but figuring out why my cooling fans weren't working or my air-con wasn't really doing it's thing was an issue. Because both fans had stopped working at the same time I didn't really think it was likely they had both broken together. Too much of a coincidence and so I looked for what might cause both to stop working.

What I've learned is that Google is no help when your 997.1 fans don't work. Lot's of chat about faulty high or low speed relays and how to test them - once you've found them!! One guy claiming to have fixed loads of faulty relays. Apparently, in the relay box, in the luggage compartment, under the trim is an 80amp fuse. I thought that was worth checking, so I pulled it all apart. There are no relays in there and no fuse either. The fans are controlled by an ecu!!

So, I pulled the wheels off and took the arch liners out and sure enough both fans were stuck. Clogged up with goo that just needed pulling out. Done. And now they work, the air-con is condensing correctly and so that works too!

All fixed. Very satisfying.

Well done for getting your hands dirty.

I helped a friend change his rads on a 996 - poor design to allow that much goo to get in and then be trapped, IMO.

Yes, some of the issues with these older cars just takes time to figure out...not necessarily any special tools....just time

You have to wonder if Porsche had really got the hang of water cooling when it built the 996 and 997.
