I have previously inquired about unifi kit but never got anywhere with it then due to lack of availability of the dream machine.
Anyway I have the need of a few small switches and the switch flex mini would do nicely but do I need anything else to get them working and managed is it the cloud key I need?

You can install the controller software on your pc or laptop if all you need to do is adopt the switches to get them working. You don't need to run the controller software all the time. Rather than buy a cloudkey I run the controller on a Pi.

Are you going to integrate them with other Unifi products? Or just standalone switches?

AS above, I just run the controller on a Raspberry Pi, easy to set-up.

Me too, I run pi-hole on it too. Works a treat!

Used to run both the controller and pihole on raspberry pies but since moved to running them as dockers on my unRaid server. Both run really well.

Depending on your line speed you might want to hold off on the USG. It looks like it’s being replaced soon by the UXG.

UXG looks like it’ll handle well over 1gbit with all of the protection stuff on (like the UDM does) but support adoption by controller. 3 port USG is limited to something like 85meg. UXG was released in “early aceesss” several months ago (at a higher pric than UFM).

USG is fine on my 920/120 connection. It's only if you go for full blown IDS/IPS that the speed becomes limited.
I'd say that's not required for a home connection, unless you REALLY feel you need it.
