Hello fellow petrol heads.

Pretty soon I’ll probably settle down with some soulless but capable plug-in salary sacrifice lease appliance. But before then, there are itches to scratch.

Assuming things get better (and acknowledging that they might not for a while), I’d love to buy something next summer that I could take round Europe and then sell, not losing a massive amount.

Budget of £30k, ideally soft top, with a little space for luggage (ie not a caterham). I’ve always liked the look of a 981s but open to all suggestions, vintage or contemporary.

My last two cars have been of the Bavarian ilk (e86, M140i) so something different would be great.

It will be interesting to hear what people suggest. Thanks in advance!

TVR Griffith 500 would be awesome, and unlikely to lose any £ if you buy carefully.

I did a 3000 mile road trip round France, Switzerland and Italy some years ago in a TVR chimaera. It was awesome, noise through the tunnels, very comfortable and a decent boot for the gear. It may be a brave option though, I fortunately didn't break down, but you need a well sorted one if you went that down this path.....

Besides the obvious stuff, like Boxsters, Z4s, etc....how another car that would feel more of an event would be an Aston Vantage convertible. I've not driven one (yet) but I am watching them now they're at the £30k mark....

Jaguar XKR, the 2010 model onwards also look good value and fit the GT bill.....

Yup 981 would be a great choice.

For a proper big road trip like that in summer, I would absolutely want aircon. hehe TVR would be awesome in theory but very hot and you would need to have owned the car for a fair while to know if you can trust it.

I wouldn’t have thought of it except for being suggested above, but if the primary reason for having the car is for that trip, a corvette is a compelling option.

Otherwise, a boxster is the perfect car for this kind of thing. The heavy stuff won’t be fun in the mountains.

Thanks everyone!
I think I’ll want some mod cons for a trip like this and as people have said, air con will be important!
Pretty sold with a 981s but this week’s spotted early F Type S looks great...

Maserati Gran Cabrio.

Boot isn't the largest, but you can use the rear seats. It's got AC, and with a retrofit Naviplus unit you can have Waze and Spotify.

It's definitely not a B road blaster, but you can cross continents with ease.

I agree. Thing I like is that everything that's stuffed in those two generous boots is locked firmly away and none of it is anywhere near the cabin. They also have good oddments space in cabin, they have a good fuel range, they lope along autoroutes etc on cruise but do a bloody good job of being a sports car when the right roads come along, accompanied by a glorious sound track provided it's a six cylinder. And it's an open car which is such a delight in the mountains, etc etc.

Cabin can be a bit tight but everything else is inferior imo. smile

Go with the Jag. Looks better, feels more special to drive and when you get to Germany your 981 is a dime a dozen. wink
