I can’t decide between the two! Which is the ‘better’ car?

Forget about depreciation and pick the one you like best. Do you want a puny little pretend GTi or something with a bit more oomph. The Swift is hardly the last word in performance but of the 2 it's a no brainer.

That pretty much sums up my dilemma. Everything is telling me that the Swift is the ‘better’ car in pretty much every way and it’s great to drive but there is just something about the Up!

I was in the market for a small warm hatch last year, to replace a 60bhp Skoda Citigo. My first choice was an Up gti, but they had stopped taking orders, and secondhand ones were few an far between. An added complication was I needed 5 doors.

After reading a few roadtests, I had a go in a Kia Picanto, was impressed, and bought the demonstrator - a 1.0 turbo GT-Line S. Nice to drive, fast enough, and way more kit than an Up. Proper satnav with rear camera, keyless, heated seats and steering wheel, wireless phone charger, auto climate, electric sunroof, etc. Same price at the time as the basic Up gti, and a 7 year warranty. I paid £14k for it, 6 weeks old, 70 miles on the clock.

If you can get past the badge, it's worth a look.
The badge doesn't bother me - my other car is a Skoda Superb 280 L&K estate, basically a Golf R in a bigger body for less money on the used market.

It's the Swift Sport/Zetec S Fiesta everytime the only thing appealing about the up is the badge for some but as a drivers steer it's a non starter.

18,000 miles in my Up Gti.

It's really well made, no squeaks or rattles, it's so light at 997kg you can fling it around. The handling is punchy and you feel like you're going 20mph faster than you really are.
The GTi heritage is fun with (heated) tartan seats.
It does 55mpg all the time, or 40mpg if I utterly rinse it.
Servicing, tax, tyres and running costs are minute

I laugh at Golf R drivers, as they burn me off. Boring, 0-60, auto gearbox, sheep.
Umm, the balloon is £5k at 36 months, so I'll buy it outright!

Not a comparative review, but my other car has 400 hp, and this vw gti is brilliant.

Oh and the second hand values look incredible. That 8000 mile one you link to is advertised for more than I paid brand new.

Hmm, 113bhp and weighs about the same as the previous generation Swift which had 136. The new Swift would leave it standing.

It's not all about speed in this market segment. Have a look at the reviews.

A question like this is always likely to elicit strong opinions from both camps, with no real answer. What is clear is that Swift owners and fans really seem to hate the up! GTI. You’ll get endless worn cliches, accusations of people buying it for the badge, complaints it’s not fast enough, that it doesn’t have enough kit, that it’s not a proper GTI, etc.

So I could tell you that I love my up! GTI and that you’d be mad to buy anything else, but really your answer will only be found be going and driving both cars.
