Skoda Estate either Octavia or Superb

Hi everyone,

I'm having to sell my 2018 Honda Civic due to my upcoming redundancy from work. I only bought it last year on a PCP deal and it replaced my previous 2009 Honda Civic which I had for almost 10 years.

I'm looking to buy the next car with savings as I don't want to get anything on finance or lease etc.

My budget is up to £5K but looking to get something cheap as possible. I'm thinking of going for a Skoda Octavia or Superb in estate format, probably leaning towards a diesel as I tend to cover 10K-15K a year. Ideally, I'd like an automatic gearbox but not sure how reliable the DSG boxes are in the Skoda any feedback from previous or current owners would be great. Engine-wise I was thinking of the 2.0 as I've read from various sites that it is more economical and slightly more refined than the super reliable 1.9


I think I need to work out first is which engine 2.0 vs 1.9.

Second, is the DSG reliable and not going to break the bank if something goes wrong? otherwise may have to go the manual route.

Finally, it's whatever comes in budget Octavia or Superb


I'd like the superb as the interior space seems great as having 2 kids in car seats and a third on the way it would be a better fit for our use.

So really it's over to you guys and girls to share your knowledge and wisdom please.

I think I want to stick to the Skoda’s

My main question at the moment is,

Considering my budget and what that means for the age and mileage of the vehicle is a getting one with a DSG gearbox a sensible thing to do? Or should I be running away from any car with a DSG gearbox which has done 100,000+ miles?

If the DSG oil & filter changes have been done every 40k miles there should be no issues with the wet clutch boxes.

Just ensure it is working smoothly in every gear when you test drive.

These ‘boxes can be a little jerky at parking speeds. That’s normal and you can learn to drive round it easily enough.

My sister has a 2012 Superb 2.0TDI DSG estate, done 140k, no mechanical issues in the 3 years she's owned it.
This was bought from a private seller who had receipts for all maintenance and servicing which showed 2x DSG oil & filter changes, the car was on 90k when she purchased it.

I drove it this morning as it happens and I'd say it's an excellent all rounder for just getting a family about. Loads more legroom in the rear over pretty much anything else in this category which stops my nephew kicking the back of the front seat!

We could not get 3 seats across the Mk2 Octavia; though there is enough room between the doors, the arches get in the way.

Exactly the type of information I was looking for. I’ve read some horror stories and some people being really adamant about not getting an old car with a DSG box. I understand that with most things online you’re likely to read more negative than positive information about most things.

It’s great to know that as long as the DSG box is serviced at the maintenance intervals then it should be reliable.
