The “hate google” thread reminded me to check what mail accounts people suggest these days.

I have 4 google ones for various reasons, one hotmail....but always conscious how much data google is scraping, & keen to wean myself off it!
I recently started using mail.com for something specific. Seems to work well - despite now hundreds of emails from various sources, almost zero spam, which is nice, but I am always curious whether there are other providers folk recommend.
Oh, I have a .gmx account too.....

I think the concern about Google is overrated personally.

Think in terms of privacy and security and convenience and imagine a sliding scale.

Google gives you massively secure and massively convenient with a little bit of a trade off in privacy.

Google don't give a st about you personally and you can have the most super duper privacy aware email service imaginable but if all the people you're emailing are using Gmail, Yahoo, or Outlook.com you haven't gained much.

So to answer the question you could look at things like Fastmail and Protonmail or even go buy a domain from a hosting company and use their own services.

But it probably won't be as convenient and secure as Gmail.

I've had an AOL email account since the old king was still on the throne.

It's terrific. Folders are easily accessible - I've got emails going back years and years that I can access at the click of a mouse. Easy to organise, it's stable and never falls over.

Plus, as I got it so lond ago, it's nice and short and makes me out to be cool(er). People often comment on its brevity.

Highly recommended.

Own domain , Own mail server running in a cloud providers free space.

Personal email usage means i don't hit any limits that would mean i have to start paying anything and i maintain complete control.

( and its always good to play with stuff )

My own domain running on a shared server. Bought it from one.com for a few quid. I think this is the way to go because you have full control over your mail, and a host company to complain to if you get spam. Not that I ever do.
