What's wrong with fish and chips and may be a pie or a saussage. Why the need for everything fking else! Pakora, haggis, pizza, mars bar, battered cheese burger, king rib, Mac n cheese.

And the biggest one orange fish why the fk is it special? It's horrendous.

Why do they insist or doing everything!

Variety is ok but most seem to not be able to do any of it well. This place I had haddock and chips it was almost inedible thick batter that was only partially cooked it was that thick

This was 1/3 of the menu!

Can’t beat a fish supper and a single white pudding. Anyway why do English chippers leave the skin on their fish? Minging!!!

That seems to be very rare round me these days. I remember places proudly stating all fish skinned and boned I mean why wouldn't you bone it!

This was a nice fish

The one I had from that chipper looked more like a sausage no definition really dark brown think batter *puke*

Can't help if you wandered into a crap chippy! Next time I'm sure good ones could be recommended in advance

There was a better one but it seemed to always be closed. I lost out to the family they seemed to enjoy it but they are Scottish

I would never have fish from a place like the above picture since they never use fresh quality fish or good batter. I would eat something from the 20 or so chip shops within 15 miles off my house but only at 4 would I order fish.

Tbh this didn't taste fresh either.

The munch box I had a few nights later was just as bad but in different ways smile

Sometimes keeping it simple is the key.

Honest Burgers just do burgers & sides and do it very well. As opposed to having 50 things on the menu and doing all of them poorly

Clearly believers in the Stalin's adage, "Quantity has a quality of its own".

The variety is to give them an opportunity to get a greater number of things wrong.

Walking through the graveyard to my girlfriend's mother's burial in Ayrshire, a few years ago, I couldn't get over how many of those there (6ft under) were younger than me. I was only 44 at the time.

I’m Scottish and our fish and chip shops are, mainly, awful!
I’d rather get a bag of chips from the Chinese than from a chippy.

Exception to the rule is somewhere like Skye Bridge Seafoods who have fish fresh from the boats and cook it to order. Perfect!

You just have to learn where the good ones are.
In general in scotland if the chippy is run by a scottish person its not the best. You want to find one of the Italian ran chippys.

I know what oranges chips are but not orange fish.

I used to love a bridie and chips.

Sticks.

Slightly O/T but why do they put freshly cooked fish on top of the chips, rendering them soggy, and on a piece of wood?

To echo above, you've just not been to the right chip shops. Most of the fishing villages have a great chippy with fresh fish and fewer non-fish options.

I agree with you though, "special" fish is definitely a misnomer.

Orange fish is the one done with like a fine orange breadcrumb

The majority of chip shops I have been in the north of England seem to be owned Chinese who do everything. Further south in Lincolnshire where my inlaws now live the chippy opens at 4:30 at weekends and closes at 9:30 before the pubs shut.

I've found that the Belhaven chain of pubs do the best fish and chips in Scotland and aren't that much more than the chip shop.

i'm from scotland, IME the best fish and chips is from places that just focus on the traditional chippy menu.

The ones that also do pizza, kebabs, pakora etc arent as good.

Also in the picture you posted you can see all the menu already cooked and sitting under the hot lamps. Again a sign of not a good chippy, how long have they been lying in there? The best chippy near me only cooks to order.

The 'orange fish' is the same fish but covered in breadcrumbs instead of batter. This is called a special fish.

This reminds me of that trivia question..

What 3 fish beginning with the letter S do you only find in Scotland ?

single, special and supper hehe
