1994 Red Mk1 Mx5
Discussion
After having a long term Mazda Eunos project in the garage, i decided i missed driving these cars & that i wanted to daily an Mx5 again
... After a week or so of searching i managed to find this relatively tidy example! Its a 1994 1.8 with 62000 miles, solid body/minimal rust & 22 service stamps all from Mazda
For anyone who is interested, i have an Instagram where i post anything i end up doing to the blue eunos or this one... feel free to check it out

Once i got it home i gave it a quick wash and these are the pictures i took myself

It only took a few days of ownership before i could'nt help myself & had to start tinkering... After one sunny weekend, a sore back, and cut up hands, i now have a pretty clean/cleaner engine bay!
Heres a few pictures to show how bad it was to start off with. Looks like some previous owner went a bit 'over the top' with underseal and painted half the damn engine bay...

To make enough space to get my hands in, i ended up having to remove half of whats in the engine bay! After trying all sort of cleaning products i had on the shelf in the garage... the only thing that worked in the end was brake part cleaner & some elbow grease. I was pretty happy with the results in the end though! Heres the after pictures...

Note: Feel free to follow my instagram for the most recent updates on both my Mx5's

Now the engine bay was clean... it was easier to see whether anything was leaking & what needed replacing! After a few days i noticed that the cam cover gasket was a leaking a little as well as the CAS O'ring... From what i believe, its quite common for the O'ring on the CAS to start leaking when the seal gets a bit old & not so 'rubbery'... When they leak, they drip oil onto the heater core hoses and can cause them to deteriorate - worse case scenario causing them to fail & for the car to blow its coolant everywhere! (I'm just going off what i have read online - i'm no means an expert
)
So to be safe i decided to replace the whole lot! (I used Mazda OEM seals/gaskets)

Both heater core hoses changed out for new silicone hoses! Along with fresh fire wall grommets & jubilee clips! I didnt take any pictures of changing the O'ring as it was too damn difficult to change it out wthout trying to get my phone in the tiny space to take a photo! Sorry!

After:

Then i removed the cam cover, cleaned up the seal faces & swapped out the gasket ...

I know this probably isn't as good of a read as a super Turbo build on a super rare porsche or anything... but i've always wanted to make myself a car build thread & its just as much for my enjoyment as it is for everyone elses so Thank you if your still reading!

Another quick and easy job done... I decided to de-tango the car by swapping out the amber indicators & side reflectors to clear ones! ... I'm not sure if im a big fan or not just yet! It was only after installing the clear ones that i found out they did red ones for a more 'hidden' look
.
I'll give it a week and see how i feel about them
They can go on my Blue Mx5 if i dont like them so much on this car & swap them out for the red ones so at least it isn't money wasted!

Does the CAS O ring come as a kit or literally just an O ring? I'm due to investigate some lifter tick and will do the cam seals and rocker cover gasket, timing belt, water pump, pulleys and all that guff while I'm there, makes sense to go the whole hog and replace this too.

Just an O'ring, I got mine here and it arrived after 2 days! - https://www.mx5parts.co.uk/sensor-ring-mk1-p-243.h...Does the CAS O ring come as a kit or literally just an O ring? It only took 20 minutes, i just followed this guide ... https://www.miata.net/garage/cas_oring.html
Apparently a very common leak spot! The old rubber O'ring goes stiff & flat, mine almost snapped in half when i took the old one out!
