Enola Holmes - Netflix

Watched this with the missus tonight. Easy, enjoyable watch. MBB was not only the lead, but she was also one of the producers. Her older sister was one of the other producers. She read the book with her older sister when younger, and they both decided MBB should try and make it into a movie when she was old enough to play the lead. Which is what happened. She's accomplished a lot at just 16.
Mills was a great choice and I expected her to be great in it, which she was. Outside of that, I wasn't really that impressed with it. Story kind of just bumbled along and it couldn't decide what it really wanted to be. 3/4 way through I wondered if it was going to turn out to be a mini-series rather than a stand alone film.
I know that Millie Bobby Brown is lauded for Stranger Things (although I have never seen it) and was looking forward to this - but in the end I didn't think she, or the film, was particularly good. I think that Henry Cavill seems a very nice chap but when he is the best thing in a film (with the possible exception of Francis De La Tour) you have to worry a bit.
My 12 year old daughter watched it twice over the weekend, I was in the room both times so caught a lot of it. The thing which struck me most was lots of anachronistic dialogue. Very 21st Century phraseology. Found that quite jarring. But I don't think it was made with 50 year old male grammar Nazis in mind as its target audience. Also I'm utterly heart sick of anything to do with Sherlock Holmes, it's been done to absolute death, and anything which portrays Victorian Britain as some kind of halcyon natural wonderland when it was a disease ridden stinking fleapit beset with industrial pollution and horses
t, and with an average life expectancy of about 23, can get in the bin.
But my daughter liked it very much.

Stumbled across it looking for something to watch on Saturday night in local lockdown.
Really enjoyed it. Millie Bobby Brown is excellent in it, it is (in every way) her film. It is a fantasy story set in a sort of Victorian society peopled by caricatures. Anyone expecting social realism is going to be disappointed (see chap above) it is to Victorian drama what Indiana Jones is to archaeology. A fun romp with some decent jokes and mild peril. Great supporting cast Henry Cavill, Helena Bonham Carter, Frances De la Tour and a wonderful villainous performance from Burn Gorman (The Expanse and other stuff).

Funny, charming and didn't take itself at all seriously, and nor should its viewers. Loved all the fourth wall breaking.
