Good afternoon,
A question to see what options are available.
I will probably be changing jobs and will be doing a daily 20 - 25 min commute each way. The majority will be on B roads and country lanes with about 25% in town but not expecting a huge amount of traffic. Whilst I am happy cycling long distances, the combination of cold and frosty mornings and the distance first thing in the morning / late at night is not that appealing!
I have an F11 535d and E46 330ci but don’t want to keep them in good condition (E46) and journey will not even get the F11 up to temperature. Yes I could use them but no fun for this question!
Budget is £4000 - £4500 and I thought what combination of car and bike, or maybe just one or the other, could you get to do the commute on?
Thoughts:
- Petrol only.
- 5 or more cylinders (car)
- Reliable.
- 4x4 could be useful (haldex or permanent but a car not an off-road 4x4).
- RWD only - can add winter tyres if needed.
- Heated grips on bike and possibly luggage to keep helmet in / pick up shopping etc.
Cars:
- Lexus IS250 / GS300.
- Audi with 3.2 V6 and Quattro.
- Subaru Legacy / Outback.
Bikes:
- VFR 800.
- CBR 600.
- Bandit 650 / 1250.
In know there are probably a billion combinations but interested to hear thoughts.

I have an old Honda Deauville 650 which I love to bits. Shaft drive, so no need to worry about chain maintenance, plenty of room for things, comfy with good weather protection. Can be a bit difficult to find neutral, it's not going to win any speed records but it's really, really good fun. And you can take it away for the odd weekend. I would look for one of those (clearly I'm biased).
I can't help with the car but I can with the bikes.
The Honda CBR600F and VFR800 (in FI or VTEC guise) are both great bikes which will do what you need well, and with reliability - if you get a good one. If you fo for the CBR, I'd recommend one with fuel injection.
If it was my choice, I'd also look at a ZX6R (G1, G2 or A1P). They're sporty, fast and reliable. I have a G1 with 30k and its been really good, once the carbs were sorted. The child in me still smiles when I look at a bright green "ninja".
