To save hi-jacking the trafalgar thread, I was just wondering if there are any ex field gunners lurking here on ph.
I used to partake in Devonport.(Still got the T shirt :D)
Any pompey bstards or wafu wasters about?
I only wonder as they still run brickwoods over at MOD abbey wood which is good to see.

Field gun race: Devonport, Portsmouth and Fleet Air Arm? Used to be the highlight of military tattoos, when we were allowed to have them and not feel guilty about the Empire.
Cancelled due to it might hurt somebody I think?
Absolutely no offence to Mike intended but sometimes one wondered at the lads they picked for the field gun competition.
To keep it in layman terminology. One year during practice someone lost/dropped the cotter pin which went into the axle / wheel /hub interface.
So someone stuck his finger in the hole, thinking he would hold the wheel onto the hub. Unsurprisingly one digit less.

I know that man, and was there at the time. You do have a point about the sanity of fellow gunners.

That's it, but cancelled due to costs. Apparently it cost the navy too much to run it.
I vividly remember going to The Royal Tournament when I was 10, honestly TV just doesn't do it justice.
The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery (think that's about right) were very impressive.
There was a Discovery programme on about those field gunners, pretty good stuff. What was your role Mike ?

Not a glamourous role really, heavy end.
They were quite a laugh the donkey wallopers (cavalry lot). There was a certain cavalry man, who I still keep in touch with used to bring his horse to the field gun bar to quaff a few beers, it used to love csb. Excellent days and probably the only place the Army and Navy used to get on famously, not sure about the RAF though.

A quick search of the History in particular South Afcica would show why, not that the RAF have any history though
. That reminds me why the Navy is the senior service. Navy = History
Army = Tradition
RAF = Bad habits

They used to go ashore to quell a rebellion or partake in empire protection services, one of the last solely Naval (IIRC) ones being the Chinese Boxer Rebellion early last century (1900-1901)

And during the punch-up over the Spice Islands, mariners would take guns from a ship and put them in land forts to help beat off the Dutch.

That's not a surprise. The Navy is currently decommissioning chunks of its refuelling base in Gosport as it's cheaper for the ships to sail across to France and fill up there... I kid you not.

OK I'll succumb. September 1940 ring any bells ?
As for history well the RAF only formed in 1912. Airpower now dominates. Trident submarines excepted !
