I'll take a good guess at how many people will die from going to a pub field.
Zero.
What's your guess on how many people will become infected, take the virus elsewhere, infect others some of whom might well be vulnerable.Zero.

Less than the number of infected workers in the NHS https://www.independent.co.uk/news/health/coronavi...

Of those 71 new deaths how can you be certain on your claims of "zero" ?
Answer : you can't and neither can government or society as a whole. As such there should be personal and collective responsibility to keep infection rate as low as possible until a vaccine or existing medicines can reduce death rate to a societal acceptable level(1).
(1) What that level is, will of course be different to each individual. However as has been mentioned on the debate in the past is that with this new virus the lasting effects are an unknown with new evidence arriving daily. Some people, even after easily fighting off the virus and 'recovering' months ago are finding ongoing health issues. With this unknown element of the virus it is a reasonable position to assume that if we headed for "herd immunity" and accepted large scale infections, then who is to say that months or years down the line that the UK population would be facing a huge health crisis due to Covid-19 lasting effects? Too late to be doing anything by then and people would be riling in anger that measures were not taken in the present day.
Then there is the case that with large scale infection it would be inevitable that it would find its way in to care homes and other vulnerable where once again there will be elderly and others dying well before their time.
To take that position is irresponsible, incompassionate and shows nothing other than pure selfishness.
But this has to be balanced against the economy. And that is what the government's impossible position is at the moment. It is also what is driving childish partisan positions on viewpoints regarding the virus.
The main problem however is that each time the government passes responsibility of one's own actions to the public, they simply become careless, self centered and ignorant of the situation in catching and spreading the virus.
We have seen time and time again over the past few months that if people are given their freedoms, too many simply abuse them. Beaches, night clubs, bars, house parties, university parties, protest gatherings etc.
So how can any nation fight such a virus when a significant amount of the population are just plain self-centered ignorant hypocritical imbeciles fuelled by partisan agendas like the media always is ?

So the landlord voluntarily closes but still gets a fixed penalty notice for "organising or facilitating an organised gathering under the Health Protection Regulations"? Sounds very unfair for someone in an unanticipated situation.
I don't see how he can possibly be guilty of that if the article is an accurate description of what happened. He clearly did not organise a gathering for more than 30 people and I fail to see how he could have "facilitated" it if he closed it at the point at which it was clear that the law would be broken. If it's closed then those there are trespassers so he isn't facilitating anything.Exige77 said:
It’s not that difficult to understand.
Each gathering has a “very low” probability of spreading the virus but collectively, many of these gatherings up and down the country pose a significant risk in spreading the virus.
The numbers are the numbers and the virus is spreading again.

Very well put. This sums up the UKs position nicely. Not a good reflection on the UK as a community, embarrassing even.Of those 71 new deaths how can you be certain on your claims of "zero" ?

I'm not cross...everyone was doing the best they could at the time. We've not had a ceremony yet - months later - we're simply waiting until we can have a gathering that doesn't put other folks at risk like most sensible people will.
The UK is far too full of entitled people.
