I realize that all bets are probably off due to a combination of Covid and Brexit until at least next year, but can anyone advise on approximate timeline and cost to import from Italy? Maybe recommend a firm that can handle the whole process?

I emailed a well known service provider but they have yet to provide an estimate so I'd like a rough idea as to whether it's even worth risking a divorce over or shall I quietly file it with the rest of my pipe dreams? Cost of classic (roughly 40 years old) is about 8K so not expecting import duties to be prohibitive.

Thanks in advance.

If you can get it up before 31/12 there shouldn't be any duties payable. Afterwards - who knows?

I pay about €700 to get a car from Italy up to Belgium (shared transport). HTH smile

Have a holiday, buy the car and have an adventure driving it back biggrin

No import duties or taxes payable at the moment, no idea what will happen next year.

I'm told the paperwork involved will take about a year, and be more involved than buying a house.

I know Paolo, one of the partners, well established on the Alfa scene and has been trustworthy in all my dealings....and I am fussy!

The paperwork is easy. Just get the vendor to deregister it first, give you the relevant docs and away you go - assuming they’re bothered. Otherwise just take it away - as long as you have their version of the V5 - get it back here, NOVA it, MOT it and register it with DVLA. I’ve done a few now. For both myself and customers.

The thing to bear in mind is that once the current owner has deregistered it in Italy it will have no number plates so driving it back could be tricky. Best bet is to get it transported or just go out yourself with a trailer.
