Lay-by laws for how long you can stay.

Obviously I don't plan to stay overnight but I have bought myself a mountain bike and my van a Renault Trafic is too high to go under many of the barriers. So I thought I'll park the van in a lay-by and ride to the park etc. I can appreciate I may come back and have no wheels on my van or worse but I don't have a clue as to how long you can park in most of these A road Lay-bys.

I don't think there is any national law on it. I could be wrong.

There might be TRO's in place from the local council. Likely any restrictions will be signposted at the lay-by if there are some in force. Local councillors love a good sign to stand in front of for the local rag.

Thanks, I did have a look along the entire lay-by and couldn't find any indication of restrictions on any notice plates.

locally lots of cars meet in the morning and car share, the spare cars are left all day,
they are still there 9 hours or so later.

I have no idea on the legal duration however, I see the same Renault Master parked in a lay-by on the A46 Leicester ring road every Monday and Friday. And have seen in the same position for the best part of a year. Dont think you have anything to worry about lol

Unless there's no restriction 'plates' or order covering the area you're good to stay as long as you want.

I think some councils prohibit lorries being parked overnight. I imagine they have bye laws when they do this.

The bottom line is truck drivers or their employers do not want to pay for overnight parking.

Yeah, there's nothing in the HC about a time limit, short of signage to change that.

I assume that if you stay so long that it's a nuisance the police might move you along.

Care to share the local byelaws? I've never heard of any and truck parks are very thin on the ground
