Some of you may recall that I did once suggest that Blackpool had possibly got it right on cameras - lots all in 30mph built up areas where lots of pedestrians wander aimlessly without a thought for passing traffic.

Some will also remember the comments long and various I received in reply. All of which generally suggested that there was a village missing its idiot where I could find useful employment.

Well time has moved on until yesterday I was speaking to a typical criminal (Professional, late 40s she has 2 grown up kids at uni and shops at M&S and has never had a car accident) who had just had to attend a speed awareness class in Blackpool.

Where she met several other members of the criminal element (many who she knows from the WRVS) the Majority of lawbreakers had all been nicked at less than 35mph in 30mph areas (32 to 33 was the majority). But all under Police guidelines.

All had been given offers of attend the speed awareness class at a cost of £90 or take the points!

She reports that there were over 100 attendees.

I feel quite sick that this activity is taking place in the name of road safety and is legal.

Saw a headline over the weekend where an octagenarian who has been driving safely for something like 60 years got his 1st driving conviction...in Blackpool.

It's a hotbed of Scameratiship, that's for sure...

Simple - don't go there, spend your money elsewhere.

Yup, when Blackpool has no one going there and all the businesses close up they'll wonder why no one goes there anymore.

On another note, my brother went there on Saturday night with his other half for a drive out to the sea side. At one point driving down the front he saw about 40 a side fight in the middle of the fore front.

People lying in road covered in blood, one was brandishing an 8 foot long 4x4 lump of wood and smashing people in.

He said he won't be going back there in a hurry at night time!

Just goes to show how well Plod are keeping it safe in Blackpool then! Plenty of scamera's getting criminals and would be killers (NOT), but 80 odd people fighting in the streets seems commonplace!

I was in Blackpool numerous times earlier this month and couldn't believe the number of cameras. Never seen anything like it. How do people up there keep their licences? I saw cameras placed everywhere from just over the brow of a hill to less than 50 yards before a National Speed Limit sign. Just because we're paranoid doesn't mean the scameras aren't out to get us...

A number of persons were arrested for several offences related to this incident.

How do "the Police" prevent this happening, when on many occasions, the violence is fuelled by alcohol, the sale of which "the Police" have little realistic control.

I'm not sure it was "40 a side", but even so, if EVERY Police officer on duty at the time had attended, they would have been heavily outnumbered.

Things in the town are slowly improving - there are dedicated patrols deployed to known or likely flashpoints, and the cells are regularly full at Blackpool.

Or should the "minor" public disorder offenders just get given "words of advice" from the officers, and then be allowed on their merry way having abused the Police, in front of others who may then be tempted o do the same, or worse? Or is an early, robust intervention by those officers, which may then cause others present to shut up and go away, a better idea - prevention, rather than cure?

Simple - I work on the bases that if I haven't passed a scamera for 1/4mile or 30seconds your about to pass one.

I'm of to find one of these new AA maps to see how they show Blackpool with its 50 scameras. Probably one big picture over the town. My profile picture shows my GPS display for Blackpool, good job I can zoom in nearer than that shot.

Dunno really.

I'm just coming from the standpoint that tourists will be put off, both by such violence and also by all the scamera's.

Balckpool would do well to crack down on the real problems is basically what I'm saying.

Instead they focus on minor speeders quite heavily it seems, but huge fights seem to just happen in the middle of the street.

I know which I'd look upon as more serious as a potential visitor to the area!

A riot in Blackpool?! surely not, the place is an evil smelling toilet and it comes as no surprise. Good to hear they are clamping down on the true villians though

gfun I think your lady informant has misinformed you.
The ACPO guidelines on speed enforcement are 10% + 2mph
so no one is prosecuted for doing less than 35mph in a 30 zone.

I live in Lancashire and the Chief Constable and the been in the local press on more than one occasion stating that no-one will be prosecuted under 35mph.

This
is a copy of Lancashire Police Authority's s Newsbeat magazine. On page 3 of that publication you will see the manager of the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety on record, again categorically stating stating that no-one will be prosecuted under 35mph.

It is only at speeds of 35 to 39mph that offenders are offered the chance to attend speed awareness classes as an alternative to taking the penalty/points

Ladies are well known at underestimating and misreporting figures. They are seldom truthful when asked their their age, weight or dress size and I've met several ladies who've indignantly declared "That thing's never 8 inches!" when I know damned well it is.

Up until March 2004 - theye were prosecuting below 35 mph. Two reps at the firm I work for attended the spped course for 34 mph und colleague of mad Doc successfully fought off a NiP @ 34mph issued last March - just before the big announcement of which you speak.

But their announcemtn at time stated that warning letter to 1)% plus two over full range of limits to 30-70 mph und speed awares for 10% plus 5 (again 30-70mph) und anything above got 3 points or summons if OTT to pi55 take....und this was made in end March 2004 und was on "thisislancashire" und in the Evening News und on Look North West at time. Not sure if they are adhering to this though - if locals in pubs around here are to be believed....

I drive mit COAST und use the useful gadget und the look at talivan timetables...

This is not fuelled by alcohol it is fuelled by silliness, political correctness, environmentalism, the BBC, the civil service, the Liberal Democrats, Greenpeace and Transport 2000. The same sort of thing happened in Benidorm 25 years ago. The Police Patrolled in groups of 4 with Battons drawn ready and made an example of drunken tossers who had no idea how to behave. Yes they were guilty of Police Brutality and yes in the UK they would have been on the front page of the Guardian and Mr Kennedy and some unelectable green slime would have been objecting.

But then we lost the plot and in the UK now the criminal is king and the peace in our cities is not as important as, well just getting our priorities all wrong. Benidorm was peaceful last time I looked.

Can't tell if this was tongue in cheek or not. However there are planty of reports recently from other parts of the country that 33 in a 30 is now considered one step down from murder ... Nottingham for example.

I think you may find that it is now re-written to say that under 35 you will not be prosecuted (first time) but offered the speed awareness course and above that you will be dealt with as a sub-human.

There is little or no reason to suppose that a CC has any idea how his partners in the Scamera Stasi will react or about their revenue needs. I doubt he has much real authority over it either.

I admit that I am only going off what I was told - however the reliability of this person I would put beyond doubt.

Your newssheet does however appear to have been drafted by a marketing person.

If true then why the change of heart, were they wrong?
Did they refund the fines/fees?

I do believe they may well not be telling the whole truth.

Re your lady friend finding numbers difficult, I believe many men are similarly afflicted when asked ‘does my bum look big in this?’

Prevention, rather than cure.

I am aware it's difficult to "prevent" these things happening, but the near-zero presence of the Police is not likely to discourage people from misdeeds...
