335i - 340i main differences?
Discussion
Hi All,
Starting to think about getting rid of my old and relatively faithful E91 330D and having become to accustomed to a nice dollop of torque I was thinking the 35/40 petrol engines could be somewhere to look.
So I'm wondering what the main differences are as I know the 40i has been very well received and considered a pretty robust engine but not so much about the 35i, I know it was know to have issue in the E9x cars is it the same engine?

I think you’re talking about 3 different engines
N54 335i - 2 turbos and some fairly well known issues (wastegates, fuel pump, injectors and water pumps). Was in the pre-lci 335i, 1M and Z4.
N55 - this replaced the N54 in the LCI E90s. Has a twin scroll turbo (BMW call it twin power). Was also in the m135i and the F30 335i. More reliable but a bit less tuneable.
B58 - this is the new one in the M140i and 340i. Also a twin scroll, but a bigger turbo so can be tuned more easily (I believe, not had one). Also has tons of mid-range shove even compared to the N55/54.
Only criticism I’ve heard of the B58 is that some prefer the sound of the N55. Very Latest ones will also have a gasoline particulate filter which makes them quieter.

Hi, yes I was rolling the E9x era engines into one, I guess it looks like the 40i is pick of the bunch although I'm not one for modding so 35i might be the way forward given more choice and better pricesN54 335i - 2 turbos and some fairly well known issues (wastegates, fuel pump, injectors and water pumps). I had a N54 in a 2009 335i DCT and did 25k miles in 19 months.
I have a B58 in a 2017 340i ZF8 and find it much faster over the last 9k miles.
But engine is only one thing , the Adaptive M Sport Suspension allowing me sport throttle with comfort suspension and the M Sport Plus upgraded brakes make the car in my opinion.
So consider specification too.

video on youtube (forget the guy's name, Joe Achilles maybe?) comparing X3 M40i (B58) vs X3M (S58 i believe).
Was massively surprised to see how well the B58 works, in fact in higher gear settings it would accelerate faster than the S58 by over 2 seconds (he does a speed test in the video to show this).
I've got the B58 in my X3 M40i and love it, she's an absolute beaut.

I now own an X3 M40i, and previously owned an F31 340i (and i've also had a couple of M240i's) and i think the B58 alone is worth the extra over the x35i equivalents. It's a brilliant engine, pulls really hard from low down and keeps pulling all the way to redline. It's not quite as eager as the N54/55 right at the top until it's got some miles on it, takes a while to loosen up.
More economical when you need it to be too, i guess because there's more low down torque.
I'd also pitch the B58 against the N54/55 for longevity too if you're the sort of person who's likely to keep a car a long time.
If you still want the touring then a 335i will be out there albeit rare and when one pops up you will have to compromise on spec, colour and trim unless you are really lucky.
I have had 435i coupe and gran coupe, M140i, 335i touring and 340i touring - all were amazing cars!
Of the bunch the 40i was a very impressive and definitely more fun yet at the same time more frugal engine, the m140i filled with my family of 4 on a 35mile trip got 49mpg... the 35i engine is a little more thirsty and never got above 40mpg combined.
If you still need the touring shape the Gran Coupe is also worthy of a look, they have a hatch and arent that much smaller than the touring and are fortunately more readily available... or a M140/35i with the seats down gives you a very large useable space!

It was a pointless test to be honest. Who drives around with the gearbox locked in 4th gear??Was massively surprised to see how well the B58 works, in fact in higher gear settings it would accelerate faster than the S58 by over 2 seconds (he does a speed test in the video to show this).

Leave them for in D, the S58 is much more affective than a B58.

Yeh i see your point on the gearbox but if i'm paying roughly an extra £5-10k more to go from M40i to M - i'd want to see that additional value all over the shop on engine performance. What i took from that video, is both are quality, but is it worth the extra dollars investment? Not so sure i was blown away by the X3M over and above for the extra money it would cost. It's why i chose to drop from X5 40i to X3 M40i. £9k difference in price, and i love the X5 and know it's got a few more premium touches, but i didn't see £9k extra for the additionals. People's preferences though.
