GOLF R nearly new - so many
Discussion
Hi all,
After some of your insider knowledge please.
I am looking at getting a GOLF R 7.5 and see there are currently 93 listed on VW website which are roughly 9 - 12 months old, mostly with base spec. Are these ex lease cars? There is an interesting footnote from VW which says they might not be able to confirm how many owners the car has had!
Finding it hard to find a one year old Golf R with leather seats, a sunroof and DCC.

Not sure of the stats, but with lease deals being such good value I would imagine most were bought that way.
Leather and sunroof are expensive options that often don’t affect the residual on the lease (the lease company makes you pay the entire cost of the options over the length of the lease, with no consideration for the fact they will have a more desirable car at the end).
This pushes up the monthlies considerably, and therefore they don’t get selected

Golf Rs were on cheap leases for a while, so that is why so many are on the secondhand market now.
I would work on the basis they've all been driven like a lease car
but be confident in the fact that cars are pretty strong nowadays and are not going to fall apart from being driven hard.

Was never a fan of those rims though as they're not 'handed' and it'd drive me up the wall! Given how firm it was even on the 18s I definitely wouldn't want 19s without DCC either.
By the way, mine - although a cheap lease - was treated as if it were my own. Never understood why people would abuse something just because they're 'only renting'. I actually miss it, it was great fun to drive and I'd have another one without question. Perhaps when my new lease goes there'll be some good deals on the Mk8 R....

That looks nice - does it have leather/sunroof as OP stated that as minimum criteria?

No, I wasn't responding specifically to the OP, just that mine was another ex-lease with no options (the first rule of leases is 'no options'...!) and it would'be been around now I'd have expected it to pop up in the trade (lease ended at the end of July). I also wanted to point out that not everyone with a lease treats their car like crap.Patch1875 said:
They are pretty well specced as standard. I had an R a couple of years ago found one with leather, Pretoria’s winter pack and high beam assist.
They do come up from time to time with a few options.
Agreed, it's got a decent level of kit out of the box. I actually preferred the standard cloth seats, the only options I'd probably have wanted would be DCC, Pretorias and the hifi upgrade. But even as standard it's well-spec'd in Mk7.5 guise. They do come up from time to time with a few options.

I've bought over 1,000 ex lease cars and plenty of them were in lovely condition.
It also never ceased to amaze me that so many of them had just been dealer serviced, right before the lease ended, quality tyres fitted also..
Not many private buyers would do that.
Thank you all, as I thought.
Will be looking more at 18 month - 24month old as seem to be better spec cars available (and some benefit from the slightly more powerful engine).
I have no problem with an ex lease car and agree the cars have a good base spec but I find the cabins very dark, hence wanting a sunroof for addition light, DCC to help the ride comfort and leather as I think the seats look nicer and I have kids so easier to keep clean.
The search continues.

I wouldn't worry too much about the difference between the 310ps and the 300ps - I doubt one could really tell a 5-6bhp drop from behind the wheel..?
Agreed not worried about the power, apparently they had to dial down the exhaust pops and bangs etc so the newer cars don’t sound as good. I love a bit of asbo exhaust!Even the pre-GPF 310hp cars didn’t sound that great, so I’d hate to think what the most recent cars sound like. You need a 310hp estate or a hatch with the Akrapovic exhaust.
All these 9-12 month old cars aren’t going to be leases. How many times have you seen a lease in a Golf R that is less than two years?

The cheap lease deals were not 9 - 12 months ago, and if they were that cheap people would not be handing them back so early. Lease deals generally start at 24 months period, then people extended as they were cheap.
My guess would be people handing them back due to losing a job through covid19, if indeed they are ex lease.
