I posted a while back about replacing my 420d (been solid, just don't need the economy any more) with a 440i, and I'm lined up to test drive one tomorrow. It's a 2019 model with 8000 miles so I guess the engine will be reasonably loosened up.

Is there anything in particular I should look out for with the B58?

I've done a fair bit of research on it and can't find any major known faults, other than issues with coolant pressure. Most articles on the B58 wax lyrical about how smooth it is and how much tuning potential there is, which is great, but no engine is perfect. There must be some issues.

Any advice would be massively appreciated.

As you've said, they seem to like a spot of the oil and/or coolant. Check that coolant is at good levels before you take it out. Oil filters can also break up when being serviced. You can't really check this, of course.

Cool, thanks for the additional info on the oil filters. I'll be sure to check all fluids too.

Coolant dropping is often the cap not sealing properly, a new cap sorts it out if so.

So far they're proving to be pretty hardy, plenty have tuned them to impressive power figures without any big problems (they're very responsive if that's your bag)

Fook me that thing is pretty brisk haha. Great noise too. Couldn't not have it in my life. Picking it up on Wednesday.

Easily the fastest car I've ever owned! biggrin

Oh it's just the cap, nice, I'll keep an eye on it either way.

Also with nearly 2 years left on the warranty I'll have some peace of mind. The MPPSK is on the to-do list though.

Good stuff, it’s a pretty impressive engine.

I’ve been impressed with it in my M140; the mid range is very good yet it doesn’t cost crazy amounts to run.

Yeah, I mean I obviously haven't bought this car with economy in mind, but I've still promised myself I'm not going to look at the fuel economy other than when I'm at the petrol station putting another tank in. Simply due to having come from a car that I had to drive the wheels off to get the mpg below 50, it's going to be quite a shock to regularly see numbers in the 20s! drink

Do you use premium fuel like BP Ultimate / Shell V Power, or just regular stuff?

Hi, Have 240i, lovely engine, runs on 98 octane usually.

Do hope you have a bigger tank than the 2 series - 50 ltr only, same as my Mx5. Good economy for the performance but the tiny tank makes it seem like something from 70s USA

Parkers claim it's 60 litres. My 420d had a 57 litre tank IIRC.

The filler flap says 95 but I’ve always run it on some form of super.

I'm not sure if you'll be able to have it fitted on a 2019 model. I believe the cut off was 2017 for that, after that point they starting fitting a PPF.

I thought July 2018 , ties in with the end of M3 production.

Great engine, proving very reliable and good enough for the Toyota Supra . I've owned a 340i for two years. As stated cut off for MPPSK was Jun/ Jul 2018. I've averaged 27mpg in two years (mostly town), mid 40's on a run driving like miss daisy if that's your thing. I use V power or Tesco Super. The only think I slightly lament is that bloody luxury tax of £475. Only issues really have been described above.

Worth a read of this forum, if there are any issues they will surely pop up here. That said when you look at what people are doing with the engine performance wise, its not surprising as some people are really wringing the neck out of it.

Yeah it was July 2018.

M140i’s on a 68 plate and on all have a PPF, so no M Performance exhaust.

Luckily my insurance barely moved, but that "luxury" car tax is a kick in the teeth. But, such are the times I guess. Thanks for the link, I'll have a browse through.

Just an FYI for anyone with the B58, I've had an Indy check out the oil at 9800 miles and he said the oil filter was already showing signs of starting to break up. Keeping it another 7500 until its service would've been a bad idea.

Other than that, so far so good - I'm pretty pleased. Gonna give it a proper run out over the weekend on various roads biggrin

Ahh fair enough. Minor disappointment, but no bother. It sounds pretty nice stock anyway, and there are always other options once I start to want more power.

Take a look at PCW exhausts near Bedford. I took my 68 plate 340i there and he removed various bits of the baffling in the exhaust etc to make it sound much nicer. A little louder generally in Sport but the same in Comfort.

Yeah, I had the first service at BMW so if it went wrong they could sort it, then had an oil and filter 8k later, came out no bother, everything looked tidy. That's my plan going forward, 8k/yearly changes, not expensive but keeps it all running nice.

Enjoy, they're fantastic 'do everything' cars IMO, happy blasting about the B roads or munching miles on the motorway.
