Both versions very nice. Was it still street legal with the narrowed rear axle as it looks like here? with the axles ratio I'd of hated to take it further than the local KFC.

Certainly Steve's car was street legal in its original form - but later on, I think it was not used on the street, although nominally street legal for a while longer.

I seem to recall the bottom blue one pictured rolled in the shutdown of Santa Pod and was a write off

That was at Shakey. As i understand it a core plug popped out near the finish line dumping coolant under the car and it hooked right into the field. I have it on a RV8DRA video tape somewhere.

I too am sure that Steve's accident was at the Pod. It was a core plug that let coolant under the slick and he ended up in the field, after the finish line, on the spectator side.

I think we all remember the details but perhaps not the track smile

Also seem to recall that his seat broke as well and his legs ended up hanging out of the rear side window

Such memories: It was a beaut of a car and still looks terrific now.
Coincided with starting to go the Pod as a student in the 80's with a 100E living near Beaconsfield and chugging cross country via Berkhamstead, Woburn, Leighton Buzzard, crossing the M1 @ J14 to Olney. I even cycled it 3 times with my tent - It was such a buzz.
