Decent medium sized car for £3k? (mechanic will help)

Friend of a friend is a trusted mechanic who sources oldish cars for a good price. I would like a medium sized car, and was wondering what I should I ask him to find for me?

- Budget £3 - 4k
- Leisure travel only, 12k miles pa

Hire cars I have enjoyed driving are Volvo V40, Mercedes A class, Audi A3 saloon, Golf GTI, Peugeot 2008, BMW 1 or 3 series but I am aware that these would be have to be pretty old to be within my budget. Thank you for any ideas.
