I changed the track rod ends on my Cee’d and I’m now convinced myself I over tightened the nuts,

The castle nut tightened up over the spilt pin hole, so I had to tighten it some more which I wasn’t keen on as it only had a feeble M10 nut. (same happened on both sides!?!?)

I only used a 17mm ring spanner (not a breaker bar or like that!) I'd have used a torque wrench but I couldn’t get it in!

Would it be obvious that it was overtight, should I be worried?

I don’t know why but I seem to have developed anxiety over this!

Castle nuts always seem to do this to me. Dunno why seller's provide them. I just re-use the original standard ones instead.

Unless you're Eddie Hall it'll be just fine.

Don't think you need to worry, the taper pin is high tensile and you're more pulling the taper further in when tightening to align the split pin hole, rather than stretching the thread.

The pin and threads are really quite tough.

If you are concerned about the tightness of a castellated nut or you cannot get a castellation to line up for a specified torque you can add washers as required until it lines up.

Thank you guys,

Thank you guys, its made me feel a bit better. Now I’m only worried I’ve somehow damaged the cast knuckle splitting the joint!?!?!

I used to be a confident home mechanic, now I’m a bag of nerves. (I blame Covid for the anxiety!)

More like Mr bean than Eddy Hall!

You haven't. The approved way to split these joints is by belting the outside with a hammer. These things are extremely tough.
