Hankering after a little 2 stroke, spotted this on a popular internet auction website:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Extremely-Rare-Classic-...

Imported from the States apparently and sold for the best part of £4.5k a couple of years back with an asking price now starting at £5k.

Has the world gone mad?

Any Yamaha with an RD fetches a significant premium. Although I’m a 2 stroke fan, these were before my time, and I really don’t get the attraction, so much more to be had for that money. Still, nostalgia sells.

It’s car prices that get me, recently started looking more into cars but they’re such awful value compared to bikes. I’m in my 30s and still have a nice chunky mortgage to settle so the idea of spending 30-50k on a weekend/sports car that gives about 1/5th of the driving/riding/owning pleasure of a 10k bike is just something I can’t even sell to myself!

You aren’t paying for a crapped out 2-stroke. You are paying for a what is now a classic and rare bike.

These things are worth what people are prepared to pay.

Same as everything else.

Or AR80s or Suzuki X7s or KH's

The teenager is 17 soon so we were looking at 2 stroke 125s (RS's, Mito's etc) and prices for them are starting to go a bit silly as well so might be the time to buy before they go completely mad and while you can still get bits 'relatively' cheaply.

We ended up with a sheddy Mito and like all things owned by teenagers, be prepared for numerous bodges and general lack of maintenance

Finding this question really weird, especially living in this current twilight zone of a siht world right now.
There is very little that is not completely bonkers and out of this world in 2020.

A lot of people want what they wanted / had as a kid.

Hence many cars / bikes around 20+ years old tend to appreciate as all the tatty ones have been scrapped - have you seen the prices of Mk1 / Mk2 Escorts ?

It's the really old stuff that surprises me - perhaps their parents / grandparents had one

All depends on what year with these things and most classic stuff...if its an early 1970s one thats good....later 1980s not so good...

Not sure on the year to be honest? The place its in is a garage which does EV conversions on classic cars and they just had it in the window of their showroom. I forgot just how tiny those things really are.

Aren't bike prices in general due a bit of a dip? I can understand the 125 and moped market being strong over the summer as people avoid public transport, also the larger bikes with people on furlough having the time to enjoy the summer and perhaps some covid related "fk it" approach to just getting a new bike but surely with the furlough scheme getting wound down, likely redundancies before the year is out and the complete unknown of brexit to come the used market is due a significant drop?

That’s odd, my Jan 76 was a disc brake.

I wonder what will happen to prices in next 10-20 years as motor vehicles go electric and governments financially penalise petrol vehicle owners to force the transition to electric. I maybe too old to have to worry about it, but shame for the kids if their inheritance is unusable and worth peanuts!

Better tell my Dad to get on with restoring his RD400, it's only 35 years since he took it to bits....
