Hi

I have just paid for a 66 plate Audi A3 from a main dealer through the used approved scheme.

The car has done 32k miles and had its second service a couple of weeks ago when it arrived at the dealership. The previous owner had it on a variable 18k service plan.

I asked if the first service at 18k was at an Audi dealership and it turns out they don’t have any record of that service... He said they know it was done because when they got it in the reader said next service due in 4k miles (instead of overdue by 14k miles).

I said I would like to know where the service was done and he has tried to contact the previous owner but he’s not heard back from them.

I have just paid for the car so I’m a bit concerned. Is this an issue or can I trust that the service had been done at 18k as the dealer is suggesting? He seems to think that as the service light had been reset it must of been done by an authorised garage.

you need to read the small print on the audi approved scheme

Do they claim all cars will have FSH? Also FSH is such a grey area.
Do they have a 30 day 'cooling off' period or similar when you can return the car? Perhaps indicate you might take this route if they are not more helpful?

The thing is they might just make up a computer print out to say it was serviced - would you accept that?

He said that for it to be considered for the used approved scheme it must of been serviced on time.

I am less worried about the FSH record and more worried that it missed its first service completely.

I think the fact that the service mileage reader had been reset means it must of had one? Presumably the chance of someone resetting that without giving it a service are very low?

Ask them, or another Audi dealer, if the missing service proof will affect a warranty claim.

I'd want it in writing.

Also worth considering, most Audi dealers wouldn't buy that car as they wont be able to retail it as "FSH"

Is it the same Audi dealer that sold you a car with rubbish paintwork repairs?

I thought I recognized your user name.

No it is another dealership. I managed to return the one with the bad paint job.

I can't seem to catch a break!

It's not your fault, one should be able to trust "Audi Used Approved" to supply you with a proper car.

I'm sorry to say, but I wouldn't buy that car unless they can supply proof of that service.

Have they advertised it with FSH?

I've sold plenty of Audis to Audi dealers and all the ones I've encountered would only buy cars with a full Audi history, it's one of the first things they ask.

I'd just return it...4 year old a3's with a full service history are not rare beasts.

You've paid for approved used, and it doesn't seem to fit the bill. How will you explain the missing service when you move it on?

Have you taken delivery of the car yet?

If you haven't then you're likely to be able to get your money back.

Just tell them you would expect an "Audi approved used car" to have a full, provable, service history.

A sales person simply saying "it must have been done" is simply not good enough, tell them this.

Just looked at the webiste, so it has not been incorrectly described...

Service History

We will endeavour to provide you with a service history certificate at the time of vehicle handover, detailing all routine servicing work that has been done by the Authorised Audi Centre network.

So because they say "endeavour" it means that a FSH is not guaranteed?

I don't understand how they can sell cars as approved used without any service history, it seems like the most basic thing to check.

classic vague description of FSH

The Audi dealer has detailed all service work carried out by the Authorised Audi Centre network - it's been serviced once by them.
The missing service, they know nothing about so they can't give details.

I'd expected better from Audi approved

Basically nobody has a clue if it has been serviced or not, the light could of been turned off by anybody.

Most good specialist garages have access to the online Audi service record and would update that so it would appear on the Audi website.

So they have either had it reset or a garage who doesn't have access to the records have done it and reset it.

I'm presuming it hasn't come with any paperwork or invoices either then?

Update!

My salesman got a hold of the previous owner. The service was done by a "local service and MOT centre, VAT registered garage with over 30 years experience".

The salesman said we would contact them tomorrow to confirm the exact date and miles that it was done.

Presuming I can get proof of this, I take it I am in the clear to go ahead with the purchase?

Is it unusual for a Audi to get its first service at a regular mot/service place rather than the dealer ?

Unless they have proof that it was serviced to Audi's specification using the correct parts and fluids I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. In fact I would probably still walk away from it even with the proof.

If I were you I would get the garage to print a backdated invoice for you/the cars records. That will fill the missing void when you come to move the car on in the future.

No car new or old has to go to the main dealer for a service, just as long as the correct service procedure is followed.
