Just been reading a post regarding whether the targa section is carbon fibre or not. I don't care really I like the look from the inside and it works.
What I was wondering is, has anyone ever tried a different top covering other than the mohair.:scratchchin:
I know to my cost that the mohair is prone to damage when being put in the boot. Just wondered if anyone had tried a paint or other finish, what is the practicality and more importantly what would it look like.

Saw the pic on your profile, but it's difficult to get a proper impression from that angle.
Any chance of a side view looking from slightly above.

Andy, I was imagining something pretty horrendous, but actually that doesn't look at all bad. Yes, the rear section does "contrast" a little, but its not that bad.
I actually asked at the factory when mine was being built if they could put the carbon fibre effect on the outside as well as the inside. They weren't having any of that, but I think it would have looked pretty good. Until the carbon effect film started peeling off of course
My targa is a little scuffed along the leading edge. Maybe rather than a recover this might be an alternative. Mines dark blue so the contrast with the black hood wouldn't be so great, and a new blue section wouldn't be that expensive ... Mmmm. I feel a project coming on!
Did you do the work yourself, or was it a bodyshop job?
>> Edited to add: BTW I was born in County Durham, I have a Chim with a headlight conversion, and I work in IT too! Maybe we are twins separated at birth?

Isn't that the problem though? Mohair gets a little scuffed paint would have been destroyed. Maybe OK if you can design a protective covering to put it in the boot. Cost wise the roof is pretty rough so you'll need to allow a fair bit for sanding/glassing flat for the paint. Should look good though, good luck.

I have got a bag made up for the roof section as well so you take the roof off, put it in a large leather (PVC) bag and in the boot it goes...no scratches (Hang on theres a thought, start mass producing large roof bags!!!)
The work was done at a paintshop and they said it did take a while to get the panel flat as it is a very rough finish under the mohair...
How much is a new rear roof canvas and does anyone know if you can get them in red.
As for twins Victor...hmmmm...i was born in chatham, kent, and have only lived in the north east for 9 years, maybe a government experiment???
Hi, I had a look at your car in your profile and it looks good with elements of Tuscan and Cerbera in it. I see what you mean about the rear hood but it shouldn't be too hard to get a body coloured one; these people do them www.martrim.co.uk/ but Pistonheads should come up with someone closer.
Gibsons at Starbeck HArrogate will likely quote - they iused to do HHC stiff but deal dircet to TVRCC members

Thanks...like i said i was not sure if it would work buit the more i see it the more i like it. I see you are TVRCC RO for North Yorks...do you know who it is for the North East...since i have had my Chim i have only seen one other on the road!!! Got soooo many questions and seeking soooo much advice!!!!

On the roof panel issue, i would have thought that the painted panel would be very prone to chips and scratches during use, my mohair one always goes in the bag (most Chimaera's came with these when new and Leven also sell new ones) and the even though the mohair is quite robust, it's showing signs of scufs etc... Must say though that the car does look good with the suggested painted panel. As for getting the rear section done in red, i've seen quite a few other Chimaera's with red mohair roofs (normally on gray or red cars) and they look great. Most of the hood suppliers will do different colours (Black, Red, Blue, Green etc)
